1999 Intrepid/Speedometer Not Working/Transmission not shifting

I have a 1999 Dodge Intrepid. On Friday, we began experiencing the following problems:

1. Speedometer not working
2. Transmission not shifting
3. Stalling when coming to a stop
4. Check Engine Light (this disappeared after I disconnected/reconnect battery). It may come back though as it has intermittenly been on and off.

I had it scanned at Firestone and got the following 3 errors, but they said I need to take it to a transmissio shop.

DTC P0731, P0700, P01790.

Reading this forum has given me ideas of what can be wrong but I still have some questions:

Could this be a Transmission Input/Output sensor? Speed sensor (or is that the same thing?). A bad TCM?

Any help would greatly be appreciated.

replace the sensors first, it sounds like an input or output sensor with the speedometer not working

Change both sensors first...............don't just change one. My car had stalling problems, check engine light and it drove like shit......transmission sensor was the cause. Though my speedo was always working.

I purchased both an input and output sensor from the dealer (cost is only $17.00 each). Replaced both in about 45 minutes....most of the time was spent raising the car and looking for the sensors. Once I found them, they were pretty easy to swap out. Took the car for a test ride and everything worked great. Speedometer was working, car was shifting smoothly and the "Check Engine" light went out. The $40.00 scan at Firestone didn't produce many ideas.....but even counting the $40 bucks, I'm glad I got this fixed so inexpensively. Thanks to the 2 who responded.

It pays to ask a lot of questions, do research and get your hands dirty. See how much money you saved? The uninformed are at the mercy of unscupulous dealers and repair shops. You could have been soaked for a new tranny. I've owned cars for many many years and the only time I take a car in for service is if it's under warranty, gettin tires, or a front end alignment. Oh yeah, do a search and wipe the codes from the computer. I forgot how its done

I think just disconnecting the battery for 15 min or so is all it takes ...

Make sure its not just a fuse in the fuse block by the drivers door. If the instrument cluster fuse is out, the entire thing won't work and it will seem like limp mode when in reality its just a bad fuse.

Also do not let the dealer change your input and output sensors. I had one changed on my car before i found this site for 175 dollars at the dealer. A couple weeks ago I changed both of them again in like 45 minutes and it only cost me about 20 for each sensor.

The sensors were $34.00 for the pair. And the dealer wanted $120 to change them. What a ripoff. They can raise the car, unscrew the old ones, screw in the new ones and be done within a few minutes. It only took me 45 minutes and that with all the crawling around and trying to move while scrunched under the car.

Also, I did disconnect the battery for a while. It didn't fix the problem.

That that fuse in the fuse block by the driver door. If thats not the case, your transmission Range Sensor might have went out, thats a bit more tricky to replace yourself.
