Replacing front crankshaft seal on 3.5L

I'm replacing the timing belt on my '96 Intrepid 3.5L and I decided to replace the front crankshaft oil seal as there was a thick goo of oil sludge surrounding the crankshaft sprocket. I removed the crankshaft sprocket, the little dowel pin that keys the crankshaft and the old oil seal, which was cracked around the perimeter.

My question is: how far do I push in the new seal? Chilton's and Haynes' aren't much help. Chilton's tells you to use a special Chrysler tool that looks like a pipe closed at one end. It seems that the tool automatically places the seal when the closed end comes up against the nose of the crankshaft. Haynes' simply tells you to place the seal exactly as the old one was placed, except that the old seal was leaking and I don't know if it was seated correctly!

Should the seal be flush with the surface of the block, or should it be slightly recessed? Is it possible to push it in too far?

I don't want to replace this seal again! Any advice would be welcome! Thanks in advance for your help!

The seal should be flush with the surface of the oil pump. Use a socket or seal installer, because if you get it in crooked, it will leak.
