Looking for a diagnostic code

Hello - I recently had to replace the batterey on my 1999 Dodge Intrepid and now have a problem with the transmission shifting. The transmission guy said it shows code po340 no cam signal @psm code 1792. He does not know what this code means, recommended a trip to a dealer service center. I'd like to avoid as much expense as possible and still keep the car running well. Anyone know what this code means?

Thank you for the assistance!

Try to pull the codes yourself and post them here. 1792 does not exist in any of my source material. Maybe they wrote it down incorrectly.... do what we call 'the key dance': put the key in the ignition and turn it to on without starting the engine. Then within 5 seconds go to off - on - off - on - off - on. You should then see the codes show up in the odometer area... For some people it works in P, some have to put the car in N. I usually do it with all accessories turned off (such as heater/A-C, radio, lights, etc).

While my first gut feeling would be cam position and crank position sensor, followed by the input/output sensor, followed by solenoid pack, followed by god only knows what.., verifying the actual codes the car is throwing out will make the trouble shooting a bit more certain (and potentially cheaper) and eliminates doubts about whether 1792 was indeed displayed...

Before you do anything else, I would recommend you disconnect the batery and walk away for 5 to 10 mins since this all started with a battery replacement, right? This should reset the comp and erase any erronious codes.

Not shifting?

Stuck in second gear?

Classic transmision input/output sensor failure mode. Trans goes into "limp mode" and won't shift past second when the sensors crap out.

No Speedometer readout? If so, probably the output sensor.

Cam sensor failure is characterised by severe bucking and missing on heavy acceleration. Nothing to do with shifting or transmission. 0340 is the code for it though. Could be a coincedental event. These are a known weak point in the chrysler design. They "crap out" fairly regularly. Maybe it got spiked when the battery was replaced. You never know.............

Turn the key "on and off" three times (without starting the engine) leaving it in the on position on the last try. The codes will display in the odometer readout.

We can go from there...............

Does your car have autostick?

DTC P1797–Manual Shift Overheat–(Transmission oil temperature >275 F) or (Engine coolant temperature>255 F).
Acceptable powertrain temperature must beachieved to reactivate Autostick after a high temperature fault:
Transmission Oil Temperature <255 F
Engine Coolant Temperature <240 F

The only reference I can find to 1792 code is withregards to honda, which is "automatic transaxle". As far as I can tell, chrysler doesn't use the 1792 designation. Thre's all sorts of chrysler codes around the 1792 code though. FYI, the standardized obdII code is PO1792 and breaks down as:
P0- powertrain
1-manufacturer specific
92- actual fault

here's chryslers TCM codes (It's a little messed up as it is a table in the PDf manual ad doesn't cut paste very well. the first yes/no is whether or not it will set the car in limp mode, the second is whetehr or not you get the MIL):
