Transmission slipping out of third gear! :(

Hey guys,

I've got a huge problem with my tranny - when in 1st and 2nd it drives perfectly, the shift between the first two gears is smooth as silk. But when it tries to shift into shift, it slips into neutral! It there until I'm slow enough for it to try to shift into 2nd, which it does with an ugly clunk.

Any ideas what went wrong? Do I have to change the whole transmission or might it be just a sensor?

Greetings,
Tomaschewski

yep 2nd is the default limp mode gear in these trannies and most common issue is bad input and output speed sensors and will cause these issues and more. mines doing the same thing now and then i need to replace mine.

Get the codes read before you start throwing anything at it for parts. There will be a P0700 that comes up with the "key dance" but there will be an underlying code(s) that will have to be read using a scan tool (even the cheap harbor freight ones will do).

Aside from that, the speed sensors are more typically at fault on the 98-01s, and the solenoid packs on 02-04s, but nothing says that yours will follow those general statements. Get the codes read, then figure out which direction you need to go.
