95 corde ac compressor i think took a dump

when i drive the car and turn the ac on there is a loud whine. I popped the hood and the ac compressor is vibrating inside. Sounds like the bearings. Anyone have an idea of the price of a new comp? Should i try my luck at the junkyard and see how long that will last me. The compressor lasted 17yrs. what do u guys think

I replaced my seized up compressor with a rebuilt one I bought for $90 shipped on ebay. It has worked great for a couple months so far.

If you get one from the yard make sure that the center piece turns freely (not just the pulley) and I would flush it out good with fresh oil.

It's not too bad of a job to do if you have a free day, especially for the money saved. Make sure you flush everything out while you are at it and replace the drier as well.

I had to replace my transducer as well, which most likely contributed to destroying the original compressor.

With the car off, try turning the center piece on the compressor, see if it turns smoothly or not. There should be some resistance, since you are turning the insides, but it should be fairly smooth.

I got a brand new one off of ebay that came with a new receiver dryer and the pag oil for $124.00.

Make sure you replace the receiver dryer and the green o-rings on the lines along with the compressor.

I'm going to have to recommend that you get a new rather than reman. compressor. I've found that mine is leaking around the middle seam of the body of the compressor. Going to try to JB weld it.

Took car to shop today. Lost my brakes totally on the way home from work. Thank god i dont tailgate people. SO SCARY I almost shit my pants. Im having them replace the brake lines and doing a new compressor and drier and transducer. All for under $1000. They will evacuate the ac unit and refill it with new fridgerant

well they showed me the brake lines that were rotted out. I had them change whatever was bad. Compressor will be next week sometime cause i needed the car back tonight for work. $311. It would of been more with tax but i paid cash so they saved me money. The lines were from the firewall to the rear of the car.

Great! Glad to hear it is done and working again.

Yea, just about every compressor manufacturer requires the drier be changed to honor the warranty, so shops love selling them as 'up sells'.

At least it is running and happy now.

Get a UV light and keep an eye on that compressor for leaks, and anywhere else for that matter, and make sure to have them fix any while you have the warranty!

Been there done that. Really is a good thing that you don't tailgate. I had the lines go out coming home from the beach (3 hour drive ) and we made it home completely safe. I always said that my Intrepid is my guardian angel. Although I did enjoy when the 'trep was up in the garage because I was allowed to have the key and operate all of the controls [wipers, horn, radio, windows, turn signals, (not Air Conditioning/Heat)] And I also assisted in bleeding the brakes. Actually, I might want to check those again very soon.
