Ruggels transmission rebuild thread

so my trans recently took a dump again with no warning at all dropped the pan to find black fluid and fine metal shavings covering the bottom so im in the process of pulling it out, im going throw in a junkyard 2nd gen and rebuild the current... i have many questions but im going to go one at a time as i get to it, first off when i last replaced the trans 3 years ago (my first time working on cars besides spark plugs... yea great way to start) i followed Chilton and it told me to remove the TQ to flywheel bolts and i had to replace them,,, since then on this website the 606/42LE ive found says nothing about this, can it just be pulled with TQ in place?

oh and ill be posting plenty of pictures of the rebuild and sexy burnt up clutches to keep the whores entertained

Good luck with the swap and rebuild.

I have a very good feeling i will be doing a swap soon myself now that mine is making a slapping sound going into reverse and drive.

thanks after reading chewies thread from back in 07 a few times i thought i was ready to make the thread im not going for performance with this so no 225$ on clutches here just a full rebuild kit from rockauto for 175$ and going to find some 2.7 gears and throw a transgo shift kit while at it... ill link parts im looking to get in a moment

cant get a link to the rebuild kit but it says its from company called APT and works trans 93-03? im going to give rockauto some calls tomorrow and see whats up

know a cheaper or better trans rebuild kit?

If you are going to rebuild the trans, I would replace the torque converter. They collect all sorts of ASS-CHEW and I wouldn't want to put all of that crap back into a new transmission.

oh yea forgot to say as well im going to flush the system

And will prob replace TC due to the fact after talking with my dad today about it who was in charge of getting all the parts and everything when i first did the change 3 years ago... (i was 16 at the time i just knew how to follow chilton and turn a bolt LOL) he may or may not have gotten the replacement bolts at home depot he says he does not remember but its more likely then not so i half expect the bolts to have warped the TC but the junkyard trans comes with it as part of the deal i believe with the 2nd gen trans we buy so some luck their i just may need to learn to identify a high stall TC to grab that at the yard

I really doubt you'll find a high stall at the yard.

I would strongly suggest not pulling the Trans with the Tc left on the motor... Getting the tc to engage on the input shaft is very tricky, and hard to tell it is wrong till you go to start the car.

Also, I have reused the TC bolts three time now with no problems... Check for stretch, and reuse. If you must replace, buy from a local Trans shop.

I used to have a big sack of T/C bolts. They used to give us two sets with every rebuild. One set with the T/C and another set with the O/H kit. If I find them, I'll put 'em up for grabs.

so im going to the yard tomorrow to get the tranmission and just rememberd something a 2nd gen has to have electronics to show the mileage.... by bringing a power source what would i need to hook up to be able to see?

This is off my chart since I deal almost exclusively with the DRBIII for LH communication. Any other portable scan tool that can read the PCM and verify mileage is unknown to me.

To check the mileage, you'd need a power source and the key to the car, and of course there be enough of the car left to actually power up the needed components.

When you snag the trans, take the trans wire harness with you.

update

dang took longer then i thought with finding one i like but man am i glad i waited!!!

after the 3rd and final yard i was at they told me they just got an 04 intrepid in so i go check out all the Chrysler section and cant find anything under an 01 with 150k+ miles then i find the 04 walk to the front and to my great surprise the engine and trans is removed with the trans fully unbolted resting on the engine mounts! just that would have made my day but not only that, the car has 33k miles on it and was likly in the yard for a front end collision, air bags popped, bent axel and the front was banged up good... sure enough the fluid is nice and red, much better then any of the other fluids i took out to inspect...

so just posting a quick update and the rebuild will begin soon within the next week after i get the car back on the road.

still debating what i should do with this one after i rebuild the old, do it quickly in next 30 days and get credit for pick n pull, or rebuild the 2nd one to sell on DI.net... decisions... decisions...

Edit: oh and forgot to mention that the shafts on BOTH ends of the old trans have play, when the "new" has play only on passengers side (as it should) just wondering what that actually means internaly about the old? also the harness was cut out so i was unable to grab it what is needed from that harness i thought the only wiring change was the TPS sensor change?

just the sensor change, you'll need the plug and some pigtail, replace the plug on your current 1st gen's harness.

thats what i thought, it was still attached ive switched over the input/output sensors, crank sensor and the back plate so far and getting as much fluid out as i can...

tomorrow ill take a shot at backflushing the trans cooler... from what ive seen many will use air tools threw the line before doing the flush? and the new trans came with a TQ so no worries on flushing that the fluid was very good.

and i mistyped in my previous post the drivers side stub has no play, and the passenger does
