Random thought....

So last night, in one of my college-induced bouts of insomnia, I started to think of my 'trep, (as I generally do, lol) and what work and mods I want to put into him next. I don't really remember what sparked the thought in my mind, but....
Has anyone done any actual calculations to see how much boost these cars could handle?
I know that there are no turbo or supercharger kits for them, and all the electric ones are either incredibly impractical or total s**t, but I'd still be curious, just for future reference..who knows maybe I'll be able to figure something out! (Mechanical Engineering student here!) I just don't want to blow my car up haha

I have a '94 with a 3.3L by the way.. I'm sure that will weigh into the math.
And if nobody has done the math themselves, but knows how, that's also something I'd want to learn.

I'm sure they could handle a few PSI... the limiting factor seems to be the transmissions in these cars.

I hate to sound like a dumbass here (in fact I can honestly say I've never worked on a car with a turbo or supercharger), but how would it take a toll on the transmission?

EDIT: I lied. My dad's truck is a turbo-diesel. So I guess that counts.

More HP and torque through the trans than it can handle. Still, if a 300m Special pushes 250 through you could boost to at least that high, maybe even 275, 300.

LOL as nice as that'd be I doubt a few psi would raise it by that much..the 3.3L is only like ~160hp stock isn't it?

Don't. I stripped a planetary gear on my Intrepid with no boost and just a heavy foot on a 3.3. Sorry to any fanboys but the 42LE is weak. IF you were into doing some MAJOR modifications, I would START with something insane like a RWD transmission, driveshaft, rear axle housing from something like a Mustang or a Crown Vic and then look at beefing up the engine.

You'd better have a very well equipped shop if you take that on though. I've seen it done, and the results are impressive, but there's a lot to consider with a mod like that. Things like, you have to reroute the exhaust (because it goes down the center where a drive shaft goes on a RWD), you have to make considerations for your brakes, you need to figure out what will match your wheel's bolt pattern (I think Crown Vics have the same pattern, but verify that and be sure, close isn't good enough on that and its a PITA to have mismatched front and rear bolt patterns, unless you plan on going full on 1970s style driveway dragster, you want things to match for practicality). And so on. But, if you do that, post some damn pics.

If you want to see to what lengths your 3.3 can be pushed, look at this:

That's your engine. It can be turned into a monster.
