Midline system speaker upgrade

I'm trying to figure out a cheap/good way to upgrade my speaker system, which currently sounds like crap, and one speaker somewhere is definitely blown out. I'm a broke college student and I don't want to pay for an amp or anything. I believe I have the midline system (I have the sail speakers and they have no logo). Is it possible then for me to simply swap out speakers? Are the midline sail speakers full range like the infinitys or are they tweeters? Also, how about the lower door speakers? I would love to be able to buy a component system but obviously I can't put tweeters where full-range speakers are supposed to go. Any help would be appreciated.

What year/model car do you have? Trim Level?

What's the 3 character code on the face of the Radio you have now? Something like RAK or RBK, etc. It should be in small letters somewhere near the radio display.

It's a '99 Intrepid, base model. I didn't see any codes on the stereo, and I just tried to post a picture of it but the forum won't let me. All I know is that it's the one with the CD player and no tape player.

Midline has 4 ohm speakers. There's a 120 watt amplifier at the passenger side kick panel inside the car. People have replaced the speakers only with some improvement. Not much you can do about the built-in crossovers in the factory amp. Front lower doors are Mid-Bass. You can put full range speakers in the doors and rear deck. Just won't get the full effect out of them with the factory amp.

So you're saying it is possible to put full-range speakers in the wing area? Can you pry off the grille? Also what size speakers go there? Also given that the lower door speakers are mid-bass, is there any way to replace those? Because one of them's blown out and it buzzes and I hate it.

I wouldn't do anything with the upper door speakers right now. Just replace the 4 larger ones and go from there.

good and cheap are mutually exclusive in the audio world. I put the tweeters of a component set in my sails and it sounded amazing. The factory speaker is full range, but more highs on the front sound stage is better anyway.

It's all two ohm components though with the factory amp.

Nate it's 4 ohm for the Midline. 2 ohm for the Infinity systems.

My $0.02 on replacements for the sail speaker:

First off, I'm not even close to being an expert on speakers, but, based on posts by evanoliver in this thread: Front Door sail panel Infinity speakers*-*Chrysler 300M Enthusiasts Club
I went with this speaker: Visaton FRS7-4 2.5" Full-Range Speaker 4 Ohm

Unlike with the factory speakers, I don't think these will ever need replacing. I've been using them for about 1-1/2 years, and they work fine for me.

In his first post in that thread, he explains that you have to cut off one of the 4 mounting ears to fit it in the sail speaker enclosure, and also that you mount them from the front instead of the back. Everything he said was right. No problem fitting them in.

Maybe you can find some decent lower door speakers on Parts Express.

Yeah, I'm wondering if you actually have to get 2.5" speakers cause I spent a lot of time trying to find them and all I could find was tweeters. Would 3.5" ones fit there? I see a screw but I'm afraid to fuck with it unless I'm actually going to replace the speaker.

Peva, are those Visatons good speakers? Are they an upgrade over the stock system?

Tough to find a full range speaker in that 2.5" size. Especially at that price! The stock Ininity Sail speakers are probably discontinued now or super expensive. Buying a pair of front component speakers will cost $80+ and they won't play well with the stock OEM Midline amp for cross over frequencies.

If your main problem right now is the front lower door speakers from your description where one is blown/buzzing. Replace those first and go from there.

You're not going to get a big improvement using the stock Midline amp and just replacing your speakers. There isn't going to be any real inexpensive way to get a whole lot better sound without changing a bunch of things.

The Infinity I amp fits/connects in the same place as the stock Midline amp and is 240w vs 120w but it's a 2 ohm amp and uses the Infinity 2 ohm speakers. Plus having cars that have both the Infinity I at 240w and infinity II at 360w there isn't any comparison. The Infinity II will not fit in the space of the Infinity I amp. So swapping OEM amps is a waste of time IMO.

With your stated "Budget" you're not going to achieve a whole lot. Save your pennies for an aftermarket amp and speakers.

Okay thanks for the info. I'm going to get a Dayton Audio 6.5" low-frequency speaker for the lower door and see how it works.
