No heat

Hi Everyone,

I have me a 2001 Intrepid SE with a bit of a problem. First, however, I wanted to say thank you to everyone here. My car has the 2.7 and even though I have the FSM, I never would have been able to get the car up and running without all the invaluable info that I have found on this site. So I thank all of you, so much.

Even when the car is running at operating temp, I cannot get any heat into the interior. I did the key dance and I have the P0455 and P1684 codes. I also did the diagnostic for the A/C Control, and I came up with AC46.

A/C CONTROL BLEND DOOR
SHORTED TO BATTERY

Would the AC46 code be my reason for the lack of heat?

The car does not overheat, and I do not see any pools of coolant on the ground.

Yes, the blend door is what controls the amount of hot air coming out.

Yeah, as to why could be a couple things. Most likely the actuator is shot. It happened to mine.

Okay a strange twist has happened. Here's a bit of story:

So the Intrepid wasn't blowing any heat. My wife drove it home and stopped at a gas station. After she got done, she went to start the car, and it wouldn't start. So I drive over there in my car, and check it out. Battery is almost dead. She tells me that nothing had happened, it had run just fine, no CEL or any other lights. So I jump start the car and she takes mine home. I drive the Intrepid back to work, and it overheats, luckily I had just pulled into my spot. So I immediately shut it off and go work for an hour or so.
My wife brings me some coolant (G05), distilled water and cables. I check the coolant overflow, and it's empty. I end up putting in almost 4 quarts of 50-50 coolant and water. The bottle is burping and bubbling like mad. It finally stops, and I jump the car and proceed to drive home. Guess what?

Heat

So "okay, that's strange" I think to myself, and the car makes it home without any issues or warning lights.
I see coolant dripping, when I get into my garage, so I look and discover that I had missed a hose clamp from the overflow bottle, so I fix that. No more leaks.

So after all that story, here's what happened today...

We take the car out (took the day off) and were driving around fine. We have heat, and everything works perfectly. I get home, park the car and shut it off. We leave again, and I go to start it. It fires up, but when we are driving, I notice that the blower for the heater isn't running, at any setting. I check the temp console (I have the manual one) and I can hear the doors moving to change where the air comes out, and the blend door is moving. Just no blowing air, and the air bag light is on.
The car drives fine, but as I am turning around to switch cars, the air bag light goes off, and the blower works again!

Fine, I'll keep driving the Intrepid. So we run errands, and as we are driving the car runs fine for a while, but then it starts sputtering all of a sudden. Just a sput here and there when I driving, but it is slowly getting worse. Also, when I stop at a light, I try to go lock the windows (I have little kids) and when I hit he window lock button, the car dies.
I am able to start it up, and as I am driving, the sputtering is getting worse and worse. Finally I have to brake and keep the car revved to keep it from dying at idle.

The CEL light is on, and the air bag once more.

Okay, so after the novel I just wrote, could all of this be because of a bad battery? The battery was completely dead when I bought the car, and with jumping it so many times, and whatnot....

Okay so I did some searching and discovered it could be the ignition switch? But would that explain the sputtering and dying?

Ah bad battery or corroded or loose cable connections can create all kinds of havoc.

I'll make sure to to check that right away. After doing the 2.7 rebuild I am so paranoid of every little light and sputter.

I'm going to clean up my battery and check it out, if it's not that, then I am going to check out that switch. Thanks so much!

Okay so I cleaned off the battery terminals and checked the ground wires. They all are tight and clean now. The battery terminals were a bit filthy, my bad I should have done that right away.

The car seems to run a bit better now, however the air bag light comes on, and the blower motor and windows quit.

I had the radio off to listen for anything odd, and when I turned the blower control from on to off, or clicked any of the window buttons, I heard this clicking sound under the dash, seemed to be coming from right under the steering wheel.

The air bag light came on and off a few times, and it was only the last time it went off, that the windows and the heater came back to life.

The noise was this "chk chk chkchkchk chk" type of clicking, kind of reminded me of a cd player trying to read a scratched CD.

I also checked the battery and the alt. With the car off, the load was 12.2V, and with the car running it was between 13.8 and 14.0V.

Try turning the temperature setting to one notch less than full heat (or cold). And look up the MTC HVAC diagnostic procedure.

The alternator and resting battery voltages sound OK, but you may have a bad battery anyway. Many auto parts places will check it for free. I'd put that on my to-do list.

I just disconnected some of the fuses while testing today and my car did what sounded like a self diagnostic. Some of the same sounds (like you describe above). Perhaps you have a wiring fault instead of (or in addition to) a bad battery?

You sald the CEL came on. Do the key dance and get the codes. You'll probably get one for 'battery loss in the last 50 starts' (1684) - ignore that one, post any others you get.

Okay sorry about the delay. So I went and replaced the battery, as I saw that the one I had was 9 years old, and it has been flat out dead several times since I got it.

So I put the new battery in this morning, and it fired up, but the engine was chugging so bad, like it was misfiring, or something was horribly off.

So I shut it off immediately, and did the key dance. P1391 is the only code (well, besides the 1684 battery one).

When I did the water pump/timing chain job on the car, I had to pull that sensor in and out a whole bunch of times (tried to put it back on sooner than I should have), and so maybe I broke it?

Or is this code *usually* the crank sensor?

Sorry to bump my own thread but I had a question. Would a bad sensor(s) cause the car to stumble and sputter so violently?
When I fired it back up after I put the battery in, It was like it was running on three cylinders, or like a broken crankshaft.
