Speedometer went dead and won't shift out of 2nd

Driving home from work tonight, I had the cruise set to 65mph. The speedometer started going crazy and the car started revving up and down. Once I hit the brake, the revving stopped but the speedometer was still bouncing up and down. When I got to the off ramp, the car shifted down 2nd and speedometer stopped moving all together and the car won't shift out of second. I can however reverse. I've read stories on here of the vehicle speed sensor going bad and the speedometer going crazy makes me think it might be that. Any thoughts?

Thanks guys that's what I thought. When I pulled the codes I got P0720 which is low output from speed sensor, and then I got two other codes, I think they were P0731 and P0700, one was bad 1st gear ratio and the other was a transmission malfunction. Are those other two codes coming from the car being in 'limp mode'?

P0731 - Gear Ratio Error in 1st Input/output RPM ratio does not match current gear ratio.

P0700 - General transmission fault code

Swapped in the new sensor and all is good now, thanks for the diagnosis confirmation. Observation I made though, the sensor has a magnetic tip that was covered in metallic gunk from the transmission that wiped off easily. Could this problem be solved without replacing the sensor and just cleaning it?

Is this a 3.2 or a 3.5? Just asking as I'm trying to find all about the 3.2 and its issues.

Yes, sometimes just cleaning the sensor will correct the issue.

It's the 3.2. The 3.2 and 3.5 are basically the same engine, just one bored out more.

More than likely, cleaning would fix it. But since the sensors are cheap and getting to them can be a pain, most people just replace while they are at it. I would keep the old sensor as a spare though.
