2000 Intrepid 2.7L won't start, HELP!

Hey guys! Got a bit of bad news. I was about to move my Intrepid from one space in my garage to another. The garage is on a slight incline (approx 35 degrees, front of the car was facing downhill).

So I started it up without a problem. About 2 minutes in, the engine stared running really rough. I gave it gas in the hopes it was just a slight hiccup. It accelerated much more roughly then evened out. Then it got rough again, tachometer quickly went from 2000 rpm down to 600. now i have the pedal to the metal with no change. from there, the engine stopped, never to start again. it stalled and wouldn't start back up. any ideas?

im having it towed out early tomorrow morning, around 10am eastern time; so i need ideas before it happens.

So the engines turns over, but won't fire.

Out of curiosity, have you check the cam-shaft position sensor?

Had this happen, the sensor would bug out while driving and RPMS would go all over, engine would not start, just turn and turn and turn.

are you getting any cel codes? ......at 118k on a 2000 my gut hunch tells me your waterpump along with your timing took a nose dive.

My CPS had been out for 2 years and it would still start (took about 5 sec to start) and it would always shudder out at 3k rpm. But, it is important to check the codes first.

Any funky noises coming from the engine compartment while you're trying to start it? Clanking, grinding or rattling noises?

No, I haven't checked it. I was told to check that, but didn't want to go back down to the car at 2 am when i found out.

Nope, no codes at all except the usual p1684-battery disconnected in past 50 starts.

Noises--well, i hear the engine cranking (obviously). sounds like it's about to catch and start up (feels like it too) but dies after about half a second and continues to crank. no grinding, clanking or rattling. sounds like my mom's chevy malibu when the theft system disengages the fuel pump. fuel pump fires up though.


i had it towed out of my garage this afternoon. having my mechanics look at it. these guys work on most of the police cars from three of my surrounding towns. corwn vics, intrepids, taurus, and chargers are their specialty. we'll see.


as i said, i had it running fine. it was sitting there idling and it started sputtering. sort of like a lawnmower or snowblower when its almost out of gas. tapped the gas pedal and the rpms went up roughly, then the engine quit. i added a gallon of gas, because i figured i ran out...no luck. was down a quart of oil (shouldnt be a problem) added anyway. no luck. when i try to start it, it just cranks, and cranks, and cranks.....but doesn't start.

Could it possibly be your fuel pump is clogged and it crapped out?? Happened to my buddys civic, same symptoms and had it checked and thats what it was for him anyways...

i'll do ya one better: had 1/8 tank of gas. the hill just made the gas impossible for the pump to take in. once the car was level and the battery was charged, it started right up. Jesus Christ! I'm never letting it go below 1/4 tank again!!!

Something simple, yet stupid. My own fault i guess, for letting it fall so low *sigh* thaks for all the help and suggestions guys. I really appreciate it.

You're effing kidding! WHO would have thought about that ahaha. :P

A good thing to think of for those that like to run a car low and drive around. Park on a hill and you could be screwing yourself without knowing.

Well, it happened. One would think 1/8 tank (1/8 of 16 gallons is 2, right?) would be enough to get you 30 miles minimum, 60 max. i guess the fuel tank is just designed in such a way...

Oh well...UGS is all better now. For the most part. Was out driving earlier today and the oil light came on. Unusually low idle too. Think the oil pump is on its way out? My mechanic is telling me to replace the pressure switch, then the pump if the problem persists. I honestly think he's trying to rip me off. My thinking is if it was simply the switch, it wouldn't be idling at 300-400 rpm. normal is between 600-800. gotta be the oil pump, right? side note: been using synthetic oil since day one. sludge is not an issue in this 2.7.
