2001 Intrepid won't start - clicks - new battery

Hi,

Just had a new battery installed in my 2001 Intrepid ES (216K miles). It seemed fine for a couple days, but then wouldn't start for me in the Best Buy parking lot about a week ago. All that happened was a fairly loud rapid clicking and the insturment panel lights flashed. I didn't suspect the battery as it was new and the headlights were still bright. I called AAA and they walked me through a series of questions with no results until they asked if I had a security system. I don't, but they asked about a remote keyless enty. I said yes, they said lock/unlock a couple time and try it. After a couple clicks, it started and ran fine. The next time I tried to start it, it did the clicking thing again, but the remote lock/unlock thing worked again. The next two times, it started fine right off. But now it just clicks, and no amount of diddling with the remote lock/unlock makes a difference. The clicking is coming from low on the left end of the engine, and there is a little clicking from the fuse block over the left front wheel. I started looking for other ideas on this forum. I checked the positive jump terminal (it's tight), other loose connections, and a bunch of fuses (all look OK).

Sorry for the long description, but I thought it might help. At this point, I don't know if the remote keyless thing is really relevant, but it seemed to make difference on those first few occurrences. If anyone has any ideas, please reply.

Thanks,
Dan Nelson

I had the symptons and it turned out to be the starter. If you have a 3.2, there is a kit you can buy that will allow you to only replace the starter's internal contacts. I'm sure Peva will have more of insight.

try cleaning the contacts between the ground post on the passenger side fenderwell and the ground cable. you may also have to clean the connections at the battery and at the starter

+1 BH1992. Had a '00 trep do the same thing. Looked at the negative battery cable and lots of corrosion. Cleaned the negative terminal and cable contact with some sandpaper, reconnected, and greased the terminal to prevent future corrosion. The person who installed the new battery probably didn't clean the battery terminals.
