car turns over, starts, shuts down immediately

hey guys, got a bit of a problem here, and want to tax your brains before i put a bullet in her....i mean, take her to the mechanics place to get really ripped off.
On the way home from putting on some new rubber, she decided to just up and die at my subdivision gate. started her back up right away and drove about 100 yards, then shut down. started up again and drove her into the drive and she shut down again. once parked, i let her alone for a day. went out to start her up, and she turns over, starts like she has fuel, but then shuts right off again. i did run her low on fuel, but not below 1/8th of a tank, so bought 2 gallons of fuel and put it in and tried again. same song second verse. starts up, then shuts right off. check engine light on.
any ideas? don't want to have her hauled in right away if it is sumptin that i can fix with the help of the forum.

thanks,
calvin

I'm thinking its a crank sensor or a bad ASD relay, just a shot in the dark here. You can swap the relay in like 30 seconds to rule that out.

Yep - swap the ASD rely for the one next to it to see if that fixes it.

Its under the hood in a box with all the relays for the car. The box will have a key which will tell you which is the ASD relay (auto shut down) Pull that one out and swap it for the one for your lights (assuming the lights work now) If the swap fixes the problem take the one that you swapped from the ASD slot to the parts store and say "I need one like this"

ASD didn't work

ok, got home and pulled the ASD relay out and put in another 30 amp relay. no bananas! guess i'll just have to keep looking. probably ought to get the crank sensor and cam sensors anyway, since it is 11 years old. maybe that might do the trick.?.?. any other suggestions. i really wanna keep her running and don't want to have to take her to the vet and put her down.

So, what error codes did you get? You did say the CEL was on, right?

car doesn't seem to like the key dance thing. maybe i am doing it wrong? i don't get any error codes or "done" or anything. it will turn over, start, go to about 600 rpm and die immediately. all in about 5 seconds.

Insert key. Turn the ignition one notch to the OFF position. Pause 1s. Then you turn it to ...

ON
OFF
ON'
OFF
ON
then wait.
Don't rush through this, take a half second pause each time you turn the key.

Is your key on a chain or other heavy object?

got her fixed. towed her to the stealership. they replicated the problem. it was the fuel injection harness. the water outlet valve (that leaks on most of these) was dripping down onto one of the connectors. they no longer make them, so they had to repair the connector or find a donor car????? anyways, they repaired the connector for 340.00!!!! god i hate labor prices at stealerships. but at least she runs now. gotta get the water outlet valve thingie fixed now. YUK!!!

Wow, that could have been a hard one to find. I was thinking of the IAC valve, I was going to ask if you could keep the car running as long as you were applying throttle. Glad you got er fixed, that repair isn't too bad. (I consider getting out of the dealership spending less than 400 bucks a win lol)
