I think there will be some differences in the wiring for the position indicator... Nothing that can't be overcome with a wiring change. I hope he has the old wiring harness from the car for the change.
i wonder if the mechanics know how to wire it the right way.. maybe i should ask first.. i dont know

Yes the Transmission Range Sensor wiring harness will need to be swapped between the two transmissions. And easy job. That'll be it for the wiring. The rest is all OK.

Just know you will need to source one with it. When I bought at a junk yard of the shelf of stock transmissions, they took Mr right to the car they pulled from and got the correct harness for me.

I believe one option would be to swap the range sensor between the trannies and stay with the old harness. Pan and valve body have to be dropped to do it though. Opportunity to change the filter and fluid anyway?

EDIT: I believe that the harness from your car is compatible with the '98 range sensor - see my next 2 posts. Different year harnesses can be mixed and matcehd with different year range sensors.

That green connector in the last picture is the TRS (Transmission Range Sensor). As Peva suggested it's best if you swap the TRS from your original transmission into this one. It requires the pan be dropped and the valve body be removed to accomplish this. As far as all the wiring you're showing in the pictures...it's not important. You'll be using all of the original harness that's currently in your car. A pan drop and fluid change is recommended anyway as you don't know the condition of what's in the transmission you bought. All the instructions for removing and replacing the TRS are in the FSM that can be downloaded here:

My apologies. The range sensors and the connector are the same - there's only one wire difference because of the computers, but the harness takes care of that. Will post schematics for both years in a few minutes.

Ronbo - I'm pretty sure I'm right about this - do you agree?

The range sensor parts are the same for *all* years, and they include the mating half of the connector. The harness difference is due to the changes in computers starting in '02, but that doesn't affect the range sensor part - so no changes needed.

Schematics from '00 and '02 FSM's (don't have the '98 FSM pdf, but same as '00 for this page):

Are you sure the range sensors are the same? I looked at the connector pin-outs and the shape of the connectors was different. Then I took a look at the parts catalogs and this is what's listed for the Sensor, Manual Valve Lever:

1998 - 04659492AC
2002 - 04659677AC

You won't be using any of the wiring harness that came with that used transmission. The harness that's already in your car is the one that will connect to the used transmission. From what I see you'll need to swap the TRS from your current transmission to the used one you just bought. Or buy a new TRS for a 2002-2004 car and have it installed in the used transmission you just bought.
