Hello all, first post here. I did some Google searches and that led me to this site.
About 5 days after I bought this '99 Dodge Intrepid w/ 2.7L, it overheated while driving on the freeway. That resulted in replacing the radiator, hoses, thermostat, belts and a pulley. That set us back $1K exactly. Ever since then, it has had a hard time staying below half on the temp gauge on hotter days this summer or when going up a decent hill with the A/C on.
Fast forward 2 months: it started to get hot again - about 3/4 on temp gauge on my wife yesterday on the freeway. Thankfully she saw it and pulled over, waited, and then took some slower back roads home. Today while checking around, I realized there was coolant leaking from somewhere by the coolant reservoir. Sure enough . . . there was a hair line crack in the back side of the reservoir; it's most likely been there all along. Nearly 1 gallon low on coolant.
Replaced the reservoir and cap with new ones from the dealer. Have been burping the level several times today (getting it up to temp on the freeway, and then parking it to cool it off). So far so good. It has not gone above half temp - likes to hang out just below the half mark on the temp gauge now, so this is improvement.
However, I noticed that the driver's side fan never
comes on. The passenger's side fan will come on when the temp gauge gets just over the 1/4 mark or so. It will also come on like it should about 5 seconds after the A/C is turned on - I imagine this is when it's registering 250 psi, right?
I also tried the trick someone suggested in a post on here of pulling the coolant temp sensor wires and then starting the engine. The passenger side fan does what it should and comes on full blast. The driver's side fan does nothing.
Please help me on what to try next!
My wife and I really love this car, and wish we would have got a 300M now, because we love the front end of that thing even better - but we didn't know anything about that car when we bought this Intrepid.
After buying the car, investing in the cooling system, new quality (not cheap) tires, new stereo, new gas shocks for hood and trunk, we are quite into it and need to have it last a while at this point. I would love to be able to feel safer about it not overheating on my wife when she drives 50+ miles on the freeway in it.
Thanks for any help on where to go from here. I really appreciate your time.
