Question transmission fluid change?

I have a 2nd gen Intrepid with the 2.7....anyways, I was thinking of getting the transmission fluid changed. Anyone had this done before and can give me an idea how much $$$ it will cost? Also, any noticable difference after having it done? I think someone was saying it should be changed every 30k...any truth to that? Right now I have 54k... thanks in advance for any info...

I can't tell ya how much since I did it myself.

I can tell you that, based on the amount of magnetized particles on my in-pan magnet at 70k, you should have it done and will be glad you had the magnet cleaned off (and filter changed).

Initial change by just dropping the pan was 6 quarts of fluid. I have heard that there is a way to drain the torque converter while one is at it to closer fully drain the system, but I skipped that part. :alien:

Got mine done at the dealership. Ran me over $100, but below $175. I did indeed notice MUCH SMOOTHER shifting. Every 30k? Hell, we'd be flat broke if that was the norm. :crazy:

what i did was went to Tires Plus, a chain here i guess in the south or maybe just FL, but while getting something done they had one of those coupon/discount books that sometimes comes in the mail, well there was one company in there that was using a trans flush and kit and all the oil as the loss leader or something for $49. the manager said he would match it to keep my biz even though he probably wouldnt make any $ at it, after disposal it was close to $70 with tax.

Every 30K miles is overkill - depends on how bad you abuse it. For example, if you do lots of towing I would go after it at 30-40K but 50-60K should be fine for normal driving. Lot's of people go by the book but I'm willing to bet most of us tend to stretch it out a bit. Price depends on what you want - just drain and change (including filter) is less than a complete system flush where they get the oil out of the torque converter too. I would expect it to run close to $200 if you get the dealer to do it. Do it yourself and it would probably be more like $50-100.

well, I abuse mine, and I get it done every 30K. Well worth the money. And don't forget to drop a bottle of MOPAR ANTI FOAM after you get the service done.

I thought that Anti-Foam was specifically what the ATF+4 was supposed to address (over, for example, ATF+3).

Chrysler 4 speed electronic trannys have a history of problems. I would change the fluid every 30K. When towing, I either change fluid every 15-20K or switch to synthetic. I have NEVER had a trans prob and I tow ALOT!

i have a 98 2.7 can i change to ATF4 or should i stick with what DC put in my car before which was probably ATF3? and will chrysler change it to ATF4 for me if i ask them?

Yes you sure can change to ATF+4. Simply get the tranny fluid flushed (old fluid gone, add ATF+4, with a new gasket and filter), and then you will be set. And if you demand that they add ATF+4 then they will. Watch them do all of this, that way you do not get screwed.

i dont think DC will allow me to see them do it flush. do to insurance regulations or some $hit like that. however if i cannot see them do it will it say on my report sheet the part number etc?

also should i put antifoam from DC as well or does ATF4 have some antifoam in it?

Why not? It's your car and money. For my tranny flush and both engine flushes, I signed seperate waivers stating that if I was to view the actual losing/adding of the fluid that they would not be held liable in case the car fell on top of me or something along those lines. So sure, there always is a legal way to watch them do maintenance.

Most dealerships have viewing/waiting areas outlined.

Add anti-foam later. You can do it yourself. Just buy it at the parts desk after they finish. Buy 2 bottles. ATF +4 does have some in it.

They will normally use the stock fluid. But they will use whatever fluid you ask for.

ATF +3 and +4 are fully compatable with each other. They can be mixed as well.

The dealership will usually either do a pan drop and filter change (transmission service) or transmission flush. A service will only get out half the fluid, but having a clean filter is important. A flush will not change the filter, but will change the entire 10 quarts.

Based on what I saw, on my 80,000 mile ES it seemed even more important to clean the magnet in the pan as the filter seemed OK, but the magnet was completely coated with a thick film of metal particles. Being that coated, the magnet ceases to be able to attract as many particles as the magnetic field lowers with distance from the magnet. I just wish I would have had the rare-earth magnets I now have - I think a stronger magnet would be nice to have in there.
