power steering fluid type?

Is there any specific type of power steering fluid that needs to be used, or will any old type do? I need to top off, and don't want to mix something incompatible in. User manual just says "contact dealer for proper fluid type."

Thanks!

regular power steering fluid is fine... actually some people even use tranny fluid in their power steering... but usually manuals will say to get everything from the dealer.

Factory Service Manual 2002 says use ATF4 (!) in the PS.
$8 a quart is IMO overkill for a straightforward hydraulic system with no clutches, etc,
like a tranny. ATF3,or commercial P/S fluid will suffice...has for me, anyway...

The 2002 FSM may say that but the Chrysler techs I've talked to say different. Some 2002 cars have ATF+4 as the factory fill for the PS fluid - others don't and you should never mix the two. Any time a dealer changes out a steering rack, they drain the system and fill with ATF+4 (at least they're supposed to). If you have a 2002 the only way you can tell is by checking the color of the fluid you have in there now. If you have a 2003-4 then you should already have and use ATF+4. If you've had the rack changed in the last 2 years then you'd better ask the guys that changed it what they used when they filled it ...

I have a 98... so I will go for the regular stuff. Thanks for the info. I am a little surprised that it is low. Never noticed any leaks.
