need steering coupler roll pin puller

folks,

I can't find a steering coupler roll pin puller. Dodge calls it a
special tool 6831a. Anyone aware of a national auto parts shop that carries one?
I've tried napa, advantageauto and pepboys but nothing.
Someone at the store mentioned I could use a punch and hammer
but am a little cautious of that.
Trying to remove the rack from my car.

thks

I too am replacing a steering rack and have noticed that the special Miller Tool 6831A is hard to come by. I am going to attempt the punch tool and hammer technique.

I will post what success I have along with some digital pics of the process.

Bobjr,

I was successful in removing the roll pin on the steering rack to steering intermediate shaft. It is important that you remove the steering column coupler first (under steering wheel). This will provide enough slack for the shaft to extend past the dash panel seal & boot.

It is a tight spot to use the punch and hammer, but with a helping hand I was able to knock it out. We used a 1" open end wrench to hold the flex joint stable and i placed a small block of wood under the steering rack to absorb the shock. The punch size required is 1/4", although I started with a slightly larger punch until the roll pin began moving.

Putting the roll pin in also requires the same technique. I suppose one could actually design there on roll pin removal tool with the nuts, studs and bolts.
