Bent valves Timming Jumped one tooth

My timming chain jumped one tooth, how much does it take for the valves to hit. Is there a easy way to tell without pulling the head.

Is whatever engine you have (chain?=2.7) dead in the water?
How do you know that the valve timing is off? Does the engine rotate at all?
Easy test for valve damage is to check compression on all cylinders... should be able to hold about 100psi, I think. Compression gauge screws into the spark plug hole and isn't expensive..$20-30..
