02 intrepid - code P0700

Hi all,
I am new to this Forum.
I have a 2002 Dodge Intrepid that is having a Transmission problem.
For the first 10 or more miles that I drive the Transmission shifts perfectly as when it was new.
Then I will come up to a light and the car will slow down and then the tranny just thuds as it is downshifting.
When I drive away from the light the Transmission will no longer shift and stays in one gear.
Then if I turn off the car for a short errand and return, when I drive away,
all is fine again for awhile and then the process starts all over.
I have checked the code with the key on and off process and I
get a P0700 then "done" in my mileage display, my OBD Engine light is on.
Though it flashes after the word done appears in my odometer.

From what I have seen in searching the web this is an indication that there is a problem with
my (TCS) Transmission Control Assembly.
The Transmission Solenoid Assembly is bad.
What is entailed in repairing this?
Is the Solenoid pack internal or external of the Transmission.
Has any one had this repaired before and what does it cost.
I went to GoodYear but they tell me to go to the Dealer.
My Transmission has 105,000 miles on it.

Thanks for any help,
Bud

Try looking into you input and output transmission pressure sensors. Is your speedo cluster still working? You have hit what is affectionatly known as "limp mode". If your car is under any warrenty, I would take it to the dealer. Let us know and welcome to the sight!

Sounds 100% like tranny sensors to me......my '02 did that crap at 20,000km's ;)

Apparently it's not a hard fix......and your powertrain should still be under warranty if it's an '02.

Get it scanned!

I had the same problem on my 2002 ES. I tried the input and output speed sensors to only go back into limp mode 40 miles later. It turned out to be a transmission control solenoid. It cost about $420 to repair it after labor.

You should get it scanned to see what the problem really is.

Check your transmission fluid! These transmissions are very sensitive to fluid quality! The solenoids can be easily clogged by dirt, that's what did mine in, the previous owner left the dipstick loose!

The transmission fluid should be changed every 30000 miles.

Anytime the transmission malfunctions, the fluid should be flushed and the filter should be replaced. The fluid type is important! USE ONLY ATF+4 FLUID!! Failure to use Mopar ATF+4 will result in poor transmission performance and may cause the early death of your tranny!

ATF+4 can be tricky to find, most auto stores do not carry it yet but you can get it at the dealer.

A lot of transmission shops put the wrong fluid in when they flush a Chrysler transmission, Dexron or Mercon with an additive is NOT a substitute for ATF+4! Please, play it safe, get the flush and filter change done at a Dodge or Chrysler dealer, they will have and use the correct fluid.

These questions should help diagnose the problem:

Did you keep the same overall wheel and tire diameter, if not then the tranny may be confused as to what speeds it is going. That could, in theory, cause an incorrect gear ratio error. The fix for this would be reprogramming a value in the TCM, a mechanic with the right scan tool can do this. Try reseting the PCM and puting the old wheels and tires on and see if the problem comes back.

If the wheels with tires are the same overall diameter as the old ones or the problem comes back after puting the old wheels back and resetting the PCM, then you have a BIG problem! Incorrect gear ratio means that something is physically wrong inside the transmission. :(

You are probably looking at a rebuild in this case. Make sure you get the updated Chrysler parts, kevlar clutch packs and a shift kit while you're in there.

P700 is Tans code... P440-441 is evap. I had the same problems with my Tansmission going into limp mode... changed the input & output sensors (# 4 & 2 )... (easy job) but that didn't clear it...
Turned out to be my solenoid pack in the transmission... took it to Trans shop and had it changed & filter and fluid changed... cost me $600 all together.. that was 3 years ago and it still changes gears like a dream.

I have the 04 LH FSM. It says to use the DRBIII to "Quick Learn" after installing a replacement solenoid pack. Do I really have to do this?

I would say yes if the FSM calls for it. I had my solenoid done at a shop.

Thanks for the quick reply. I changed it out today and will take it to the Dealer on Monday.
Hopefully, I can make it there.
The solenoid pack was actually easier to replace than I thought it would be. Messy, but easy.
Thank god for kitty litter! lol

Thanks Intrepticon... i greatly appreciate it. I had a funny feeling it was the solenoid but didn't want to change something until i was sure. After looking more into it...ill be changing it soon.
Cheers to everyone on here with their help.
