Anybody tried tweekig this system? I looked it up in the Haynes Repair Manual. Complete discription with pictures. I'm told this is only on a HO engine. The manifold tuning valve is located on the front of the intake manifold. The PCM tells it at a preset speed to open. This diverts the incoming air in a shorter path enhancing high speed power.
My plain 3.5 has a plate bolted on the manifold where the manifold tuning valve would be located. The book says this valve along with a short runner valve opens a crossover passage between the two sides of the upper intake plenun, improving the acoustical tuning qualities of the intake. It only opens during wide open throttle. Would'nt this be a good thing anytime and how can the rest of us create this in a full time mode without having to add the works. Since it is controlled by the PCM that we don't have.
Kind of what I first thought. I think all the PCM functions are simply activating the switches which move somethig mechanical inside the manifold housing. Seewhere I'm going?
If it was as simple as having it open all the time, I don't think DC would have wasted the money on the valve.
The engineering explanation is that optimum tuning changes with speed due to resonances (behaviors and interactions that are frequency dependent) of the intake air cavities. It may even have something to do with valve overlap (a brief period of time during engine rotation when intake and exhaust valves both are open, which is why some backpressure in the exhaust is needed for low end torque - again - has to do with resonances, tuning, etc. - not intuitive stuff unless you work with it all the time.
Maybe, why not try it and let us know. I'm looking at a picture so I may be wrong, but if you disconnect the actuator and manually open the short runner valve. It might direct the air flow to the shortest path.
I have a 2.7 and looked at the pic with and without, so i guess i have one is this thing giving me more power or what? Its a little triangle thing comin off the front right side manafold right?
You don't want to have it open or closed all the time. Its there to create low end torque and hi end horsepower.
Long and small(diameter) runners create lots of air velocity, thus more torque. Short and large(diameter) runners can flow more air faster this more hp.
The tuning valve gives you the best of both worlds, Low end and hi end. Tuning where it opens might gain you some more hp or torque in diferent areas, But settings from the factory are very optimized.

Really? You have an ES? When I was looking at getting a 'Trep back in summer 2000, I looked at all the trim levels. I saw that the 2.7L was offered in both the SE and the ES trim levels. The difference was that the 2.7L for the ES got the runner valve thingy which gave it like one more hp (200 vs 201).
There are people who have the same questions now as someone had over 14 years ago. And when they do a web search, they end up on the same thread where someone asked the same question over 14 years ago, and they still want an answer. And if someone answers the question that is over 14 years old, then the site becomes more useful.
I expect that if the proprietors disagreed, they would block comments to threads that are over 14 years old, or remove threads that are over 14 years old, or take down the site entirely.
Now let's hope that all the members act as if they are over 14 years old.
Actually the Moderators have been closing old threads as they come up. They don't have time to go through every old thread to determine if they need to be closed.
And you might consider what I said the first time about the age of old threads. A search now should bring up the latest thread where the MTV is discussed.
