Alrighty, now before i go to far into this i have to ask. Is it worth it to swap out? My car is rated 250HP factory. If the special is only 255HP is it worth the aggravation of changing everything over to gain a couple mpg in the city?

The PCM's real advantage for you is in the more performance orientated shifting characteristics. I did the switch over to the PCM and gears some years back and there was a definite performance change, it was hard to track a MPG increase though.

I may just have to take you up on that offer.... The gears would be a since to get. Only about 6 2.7L in the local bone yard. Which gears would i need though?

Transfer gears and chain - cover at very rear of transaxle.

How-To is here (first gen., but should be similar or identical): How To: Install Prowler/SE/Special Chainset in your first gen tranny.

Discussion thread has some sketches from a 2nd gen. FSM: How-To Install Prowler/SE/Special Chainset in your first gen tranny. (discussion)

Hey guys as all of you know I have a reg. M that I converted to a special as far as looks go, I have an opportunity to get an 02 special PCM for 40.00 bucks with only the vin number from the special, I will also have the pin number from my car ( acquired) from the dealer. I was planning on asking Ross to program the PCM to my car using his obd3 at Art's meet in sept, or am I still needing info from the donor car ? Definitely no keys available, not sure about the skim. TIA guy 's... Oh and buy the way I also have a set of special gears waiting to be installed..

you can program the key very easly it takes no more than 3 min ill send u a link of how to do it i did it in my 02 trep very easy (1) Obtain the additional Sentry Key transponder
blank(s) that are to be programmed for the vehicle. Cut
the additional Sentry Key transponder blanks to match
the ignition lock cylinder mechanical key codes.
(2) Insert one of the two valid Sentry Key transponders
into the ignition switch and turn the ignition
switch to the ON position.
(3) After the ignition switch has been in the ON
position for about three seconds, but no more than
fifteen seconds, cycle the ignition switch back to the
OFF position. Replace the first valid Sentry Key in
the ignition lock cylinder with the second valid Sentry
Key and turn the ignition switch back to the ON
position. Both operations must be performed within
15 seconds.
(4) About ten seconds after the completion of Step
3, the VTSS indicator LED will start to flash and a
single audible chime tone will sound to indicate that
the system has entered the “Customer Learn” programming
mode.
(5) Within about fifty seconds of entering the “Customer
Learn” programming mode, turn the ignition
switch to the OFF position, replace the valid Sentry
Key with a blank Sentry Key transponder, and turn
the ignition switch back to the ON position.
(6) About ten seconds after the completion of Step
5, a single audible chime tone will sound and the
VTSS indicator LED will stop flashing and stay on
solid for about three seconds to indicate that the
blank Sentry Key transponder has been successfully
programmed. The SKIS will immediately return to
normal system operation following exit from the
“Customer Learn” programming mode.
(7) Go back to Step 2 and repeat this process for
each additional Sentry

^^...that's great if you already have two sentry keys programmed to the SKIM. If you only have one programmed key...it's a trip to the dealer with the PIN to get additional keys programmed.

Again..if you're doing the swap the ideal package to get is the PCM, matching SKIM module and two Sentry keys already programmed to the SKIM. Additional sentry keys could be programmed using the procedure above.

The next best package would be the PCM, matching SKIM module and one Sentry Key programmed to the SKIM. This will allow you to install the set and run. Additional keys would have to be programmed at the dealer. You'd also need the VIN # from the donor car this came out of. A pin from the donor car would be nice but the Dealer should be able to look that up with the VIN #.

Now, as far as the gears go. Do they have to come out of a 2nd gen? Or any 2.7L transmission?

Any 2.7 or 300M Special tranny.

There were no 2.7 engines or 300M Specials in 1st gen.

The speedo difference would be minimal, all would be good with the 17's.

All original factory sizes are spec'd to give speedo/odo accuracy within 1% of each other.
