Smile V8 Finally installed into Project Intrepid

I finally got the front motor mounts installed in the '99 SE V-8 conversion (poor man's SRT-8). I will have to move the radiator forward several inches but it fits quite well.

Next step, insert mid-engine motor mounts and fabricate mid mounts and reinstall tranny.

MAYBE I will have it worthy of viewing for Carlisle.

Those are my tacks (have to pull the motor to weld all the way around) and will be fine when I am done. I have a Ford 9" from a mid 70's Thunderbird with rear disks. Will be either modifying the 3 link or if I am rushed (probable), go with monoleafs from a caravan. This is a 5.0L Olds looking to replace it with 355 when finished and have the cash. I already have the one wire distributor, adding a mech fuel pump and 350cfm carb/aluminum intake modified to fit the fuel injected heads.

Sweet! Can't wait to see how it turns out! Would have been cool to drop a hemi in there though.

You put a Chevy engine into a Dodge?? I could tell right away in the first pic when I saw the HEI distributor! Good choice on the rear end BTW. What are you looking at for a tranny? You might run into issues with the firewall and hump down the middle as far as clearance goes. And hood clearance might also be an issue once you top that bad boy off with the carb. and air cleaner.

Meh nothing a grinder and a welding machine can't fix. I hope you don't leave the water pump you have there and clean that poor Trep a little bit. Good luck with your project.

SRT-8 terp

I have room for the driveshaft and it came from a '92 custom cruiser that ran fairly strong. The biggest key was that I bought the donor car for less than a mockup plastic engine. I think the tranny is a 4L60.

Please tell me that your going to strengthen those mounts... They don't look like they would hold very well...

mounts

They are 1/4" wall 2" square tubing and are incredibly strong. They are currently only tacked in and lack their bracing which will have to wait til after I remove the engine/transmission. I only tacked them in for now then will be adding the angled bracing and full welds.

These mounts are scrap from my homemade snowplow project and support 1000+ pounds each. I will send updates after I finish the mounts.

Craig

after market engine supports use thinner tubing for their structure.

I can't wait to see your progress on this....are you staying carburated, or going with fuel injection?

SRT-8 Terp

You might see it has a dominator aluminum intake for my 4 barrel 350 cfm carb from my Brothers old late model car (he moved to super late model). He has been nice enough to modify the intake to fit these fuel injected heads and donated an HP 1 wire distributor and mech. fuel pump. He also donated some surplus hard mount front and mid motor mounts. This way I have to do the least wiring and plumbing for it to run. One wire plus a starting circuit for the ignition and a gravity feed from a new fuel cell in the trunk.

Craig

The carb does fit under the stock hood and with a low mount alternator bracket and a conversion to v-belt and it will be all go ahead.

350 cfm, that's not much. Is it a stock carb?

It is a Carter 4 barrel mechanical secondaries (I think) off my Brother's old 355ci limited late model stock car he raced in Orlando and New Smyrna. It will do fine. The late models run 500cfm as I recall.

Kudos on the install. I'm NOT handy with stuff like this so I appreciate someone taking the time and effort to do something out of the ordinary. Impressive. Good luck with getting her all fixed up.

I'm just glad someone finally has an Intrepid Project car! If I had the space and didnt already have a project I would be doing the same thing. But its nice to see people being bold ...even if it is a chevy engine.
