Something to consider: The 2.0/2.4(neon) head, including the 2.4 head and mitsubishi 420 head, can be swapped onto the 2.2/2.5 block. Makes for a pretty awesome engine, and opens up an entirely different array of performance parts to you.

yep, something I might do down the road, but not planned for the initial rebuild. I don't want to hadd another set of variables onto a completely rebuilt engine.

Progress has been stalled for the most part, just had to break the piggy bank for the daytona to buy new tires for the Pacifica. Still, I have lots of other things to do, like finish cleaning out the engine bay, dropping the cross member, plenty of interior work to do. Just haven't had time.

found an 88 shadow TBI in the yard, most aggressive cam timing available. 20 bucks with followers!!

No grooving that I could detect with micrometers. Mint condition!

And now for something completely different.

Rather than spending the money refinishing and upgrading the weak and damaged components in the first motor, I decided to go a different direction. Picked up this little Gem:

drained the oil and flipped her over:

Moment of truth (pans been bounced off the ground a few times, sheesh!)

Tada!

Pretty clean.

preliminary look is good. No metal in the oil, no obvious bad bearings, everything is tight. I will take off all the caps and plastigauge the thing, but it looks very likely that I won't need to tear this down right away!!!

Look at the cross hatch!!!!!

2.5 POWAH!

Turbo head. The one on my basket case motor is not.

Happy Birthday!

SO for less than the cost of getting the crank and rods redone on the old motor I have a turbo common block and heavyweight rods. This whole engine is in far batter shape than the other.

Balance shafts will come out (sucks up 15 HP) and I'll put the old 2.2 pan and pick up on. I'll more than likely still take the head off and have the valves done and the head tanked, so I will still swap in the TBI cam.

I think most guys just use the head and turbo, but it can be done for sure. Yes, would need a new harness and computer.

Balance shafts are permanently removed, Rod bearings have been platigauged:

.0015
.0015
.00175
.002

So No rebuild on the bottom end! Woot!!

Onto the head and the turbo! Gonna start shopping for a Turbo rebuild kit.
