Stratus, Intrepid at top of theft-rate list

From the Detroit Free Press:

Stratus, Intrepid at top of theft-rate list

Montero, Tundra also high in 2003

August 10, 2005

BY JOHN HUGHES
BLOOMBERG

DaimlerChrysler AG's Dodge Stratus and Intrepid cars were stolen at the highest rates in the United States in 2003 for vehicles of that model year, as the rate for all cars and trucks fell 26%, according to government figures.

The theft frequency was 11 per 1,000 produced for the Dodge Stratus and 10 per 1,000 for the Dodge Intrepid, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said in a notice in the Federal Register Tuesday. Toyota Motor Corp.'s Corolla car led in total stolen with 786 and ranked 49th by rate.

The rate for all vehicles fell to 1.84 from 2.49 a year earlier, the Washington-based agency said. The frequency at which new models are stolen has been dropping for a decade as automakers use more antitheft devices and mark parts, and as law-enforcement and public awareness improves, NHTSA said.

Max Gates, a spokesman for DaimlerChrysler's Chrysler Group, said he wasn't sure why the automaker's cars topped the list. Auburn Hills-based Chrysler accounted for seven of the 15 vehicles with the highest theft rates.

Chrysler offers an immobilizer system on most of its Dodge and Chrysler vehicles that prevents the engine from being started without a key. The immobilizer is offered as part of an option package that includes power windows and doors.

"Some of our dealers are ordering 100% of their vehicles equipped with that," Gates said. The system was developed several years ago after discussions with police officers, he said.

The other cars and trucks among the five with the highest rates were Mitsubishi Motors Corp.'s Montero SUV at 7, and the Mitsubishi Diamante car and Toyota Tundra pickup at 6 each.

Ford Motor Co.'s Taurus car was second in number of total thefts at 757, followed by the Dodge Caravan and Grand Caravan minivan at 725, the Stratus at 682 and General Motors Corp.'s Chevrolet Cavalier car at 633.

As if the Spirit/Shadow wasn't bad enough, now the LH/JA platform vehicles are an easy target.

I wonder what makes these vehicles easy targets? A lot of them have engine immobilizers, not that I think it's full-proof, but wouldn't it act as some type of deterrent?

Oxygen, CNN states that 1 in 200 '99 model Acura Integra's are stolen (according to CCC Information Services) and NHTSA states that 10 in 1000 (or 1 in 100) intrepid's are stolen. Unfortunatly the NHTSA is giving a higher percentage rate for the intrepid than CCC Information Services is giving for the Integra.

Perhaps they are taking different things into consideration (for example, one study isn't showing cars that have been located and returned to owner perhaps)

1 in 100 for ALL years.

I really don't understand how 300M's are on the list? Aren't they ALL equipped with sentry key?

A true thief will find a way around any system.

I suspected that Intrepids would be on the list. Just from the amount of members on the site that have had their cars stolen.

This study is just for 2003 vehicles that were ripped off in 2003. The Intrepid makes a very good target. There were so many of them made that a lot of them get into accidents and the chop shop sells parts as a legal business to the body shops. I had a friend that got his Camaro ripped off after he had repainted it and when he got the car back his front clip was missing. When he bought the parts to replace the front clip they were the ones off of his car. So a car like the Intrepid is going to get stolen. It may get worse in a few years when the parts are getting harder to find.

I've seen a lot of different stolen cars lists, that's a new one, though it makes sense. Around here, the most stolen cars are ones that are nondescript and don't stand out. Our biggest cause of stolen cars here is trafficking of illegal aliens and various other things across the border. A lot of cars also don't tend to make it back across the border. Arizona is the used car capital of the country, kinda sucks, because I own two nondescript, ordinary cars. We've had on of our Gov. cars stolen, an '02 Stratus, and I've had a couple attempts on my cars on the rare occasion I don't put them in the garage. Kinda irritating to say the least.

Well, I UNDERSTAND why Intrepid's are on the list........most of them are US SE's without Sentry Key.

A running 2.7 is worth more than the whole car.
