The Newbie To Car Audio...With Questions!

I've posted a few times before, kinda went on a hiatus with car projects...But now I have my amp and subs ready to go in !



This is my new head unit. I plan on picking up a pocket sometime from a junkyard, but the real questions I have are....

I have an alternator whine I believe (When it whines as you accelerate). I was wondering if grounding it with the ground that comes in the wiring from the car, to the actual head unit is incorrect to do...

Another question is, my sail speakers aren't really picking up sound very well. Kind of scratchy, underpowered, with the rear speakers being very dominant over the other 4 speakers ( I haven't messed with any settings) . Is there a particular reason?

And my final question. If anyone else has a system in their car...where did they hook up their wires for the amp? I've heard drilling through the passenger side near the floorboards.

i brought my power in through the grommet for the steering shaft. then i ran the power and rca's/remote wire through the console, under the carpet and rear seat, and into the trunk.

so you're running all the speakers through the HU? Or is the stock amp still in place?

I don't have subs in yet, and The stock amp wasn't touched. I just took the old stereo out, and rewired a harness and put the new unit in.

As for that grommet, I'm gonna have to take a look tomorrow to see how I could do that...

I feel so retarded right now...

FYI, I figured it would be helpful to give those pictures some context. When I was first starting out I had a hell of a time even figuring out where the reference pictures were taking me on stuff like this.

From the inside you can see the steering column coming up there. That grommet is just above the pedals by the drivers feet.

The other shot, which is from the engine bay, is pretty much straight back off the right edge of the engine. If you can't find it follow the throttle cable from the back of the engine, that's what goes through there already. We just cut a little hole or X in the side of the grommet to make space for the power wire. It's the easiest way to get it done and has been done by hundreds of members over the years.

So, hooking up an aftermarket deck to the infinity system.... he should be using a line out converter correct?

The reason your stock speakers don't sound the greatest is because of the factory amp that's still in place. Your best bet is to bypass it. However, if you do this you lose your sail speakers and your center speaker if you have one.

For running the amp wire, I've done the above mentioned way with good success in my Intrepid with an 8ga wire. However, in my 300M I wanted to use a 0ga wire so I ran it through the passenger side fender and into the cabin via an opening near the passengers feat. The opening is right behind the kick panel where a factory amp would be on Intrepids and 240w Infinity 1 systems. This method is cleaner IMO and also requires less wiring than looping by the drivers side of the car.

Thankfully I have quite a bit of wiring.

Good news though. THe alternernator whine is gone, due to me rewiring my grounds, and regrounding it properly....(It wasn't screwed in hard enough in the back of the head unit.)

Also, it seems like the speakers picked up sufficiently enough, with the wiring I went about, recrimping and everything. Sail speakers are picking up the highs better now.


I'm going to take a look on my next day off, at wiring the power wire...

Sorry about the double post, but it appears I may have been thinking I was out of the clear a bit early.


I dont' really listen to music quietly, so I haven't been hearing the whine, but I found it in my passenger sail speaker....

And it's driving me nuts! I spliced the grounds and hooked it to the OEM ground, to the back of the head unit. Apparently this isn't a good location...So does anyone else have a suggestion on where to ground this thing before i go nutty?

All my HU's are ground to the factory wiring with no issues. Maybe the wiring connections in the engine bay are dirty?

It's hit or miss, but ideally the source unit should be grounded directly to the same location as the amps. If you still have whine troubles, try running a dedicated ground for the HU.

On my first HU I didn't have this issue, but my second two need a dedicated ground run.
