RB1 Software Update

Just a note for everyone with the RB1 Nav radio.

If you upgrade to the new release of software, the time will be displayed when the radio is off. A nice improvment!!.

I noticed the colors seemed brighter on the maps, and the radio itself seems to operate more smoothly and the font changes a bit cause its easier to read, could be contrast.

It always bothered me that when the RB1 was off, it was a blank screen, now its usefull all the time because when its off, you get a clock.

when you first insert the new DVD, the display comes up with a message that its upgrading firmware, do not power cycle at this time, so it does upgrade the entire radio operating system.

Is it worth the money, maybe, but if you have the free upgrade coupon, then yes get it.
I have noticed the SAT stations switch quicker.

to be honest I never really noticed it till my wife complained about it one day

Thanks for the info, I don't have an upgrade coupon so it would be $150.00 for me. I'm just a bit ticked that I talked to Navtech last week regarding the release and the girl said there were no firmware upgrades at all with this DVD.

That would be nice to be able to see a clock with the radio off. But...........I'm going to hold out until I know there are no errors with this update. Last time......us Texans got screwed around.

No way this is worth $150.

I'll wait for the next full release.

Anyone have any ideas when that'll be? I'd also like to know how long they'll keep making firware updates for the RB1. AFAIK, it's only living on in the Grand Caravan.

I believe new updates are done yearly around mid year. There are times they have running changes during the year, if they need to correct errors found on the previous release. But, I also believe that every release is $150. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Jeez....

Time to consider a cheap-o laptop with a 10" screen, a minimal install of 'some kind of windows', PocketMap Navigator (or pick your WinTel GPS software of choice), a swing-arm kind of mount, and a decent a GPS card.

I know that I could build a laptop-based in-car GPS mapper for about $800, all inclusive. Oh, *and* you'll be able to play DVDs with the laptop too.

Really? Is it going to fit flush mount into the dash, turn on with the car, and command through the cars sound system?

If we wanted some huge tacky screen, we would've bought one.

tex,

Yeah, you're right. But, with the RB1 being phased out, it makes you wonder how long Navteq will continue to make RB1 specific upgrades. I'm hoping for at least 5 years.

Yeah, I'm hoping *at least* that long. Would be a shame to have spent that much money only to be phased out so soon, and no longer be able to get updates.

I'm thinking that someday it will be no more firmware upgrades, but the maps will become more and more updated/detailed until NavTeq gets out of the business. They make like %80 of all automotive Nav system databases right now. That wouldn't be a terrible compromise.

I think dodint has the right thinking. Firmware will probably be supported/upgraded as long as DC decides to do it. But the map database itself will likely continue to be supported...

According to Nav-Tech, the DVD for the new Nav systems is the same DVD, so we should be getting updates for years to come.

I'd be interested to know how that works, since the Nav units are very different. I'm not saying you're wrong, I'm just curious. Maybe it'll have two sets of firmware on it or something.

Yeah, it will be interesting to say the least. Guess all we can do is sit, wait and see how things end up going for this. I'm sure there's only so much firmware updating that they can do, but maps will end up needing to be updated all the time with new roads/business', etc. I guess time will tell.
