How To: Air conditioning R-134a Recharge
Well, I just popped my hood and replaced the R-134a in my car and it now blows out ice. It was a really job. For anybody who needs to know how to do it, it is very simple.
First of all, you should know that all intrepids (as far as I know) run on R-134a refrigerant, so the replacement is super easy.
1. Go to a store and buy yourself one or two cans of the refrigerant. If available, purchase the stuff that has leak sealer in it. Even if you don't have leaks, its a good idea to take precautions. Since you're getting the refrigerant, you'll need to buy the tool needed for putting the R-134a in (which will run you no more than 17.99. (Murray's, Autozone, NAPA, Pep Boys, anywhere should have the tool and frion).
2. Pop your hood and locate your compressor (on the left side of the engine). This is easy to find because there is a belt running on it and there will be two dime sized caps...one reading H (for high) and the other reading L (for low).
3. With your car running, remove the cap off of the Low pressure and have the tool and refrigerant handy. Keep the A/C on high while doing this entire procedure.
4. Twist the tool onto the can of frion, but make sure that the needle is all the way up (to avoid opening the frion). Make sure that it is snug.
5. Snap the other end of the tool onto the low pressure valve and be sure that it is snug. Okay, you're now ready to start.
6. Twist the knob on the end of the tube that the frion is on all the way to the right. Now, twist it all the way back to the highest position to allow the frion to flow out freely. Turn the can upside down and jiggle it a bit to help the frion to flow inside. You will know when the can is empty, and if you want, you can apply another can, if you think you need it.
7. Remove the tool from the compressor and fasten the cap back on to the valve.
If your air conditioning still isn't blowing ice cold, then you have a problem with something else, such as the lines, or your compressor. Now it is time to get a professional on the job. If you have any questions, feel free to email me.
