2.7L Shell Rotella Diesel Oil

Hello everyone, my 2002 Concorde is due for an oil change, and I'm looking for some input on the Shell Rotella T6 engine oil.

My Concorde has a 2.7L engine (yes, I know they're a problem child. No I'm not worried. And yes, I already upgraded to water pump to an aftermarket model with an improved gasket design) with 146 000 kilometers on it. It's spotless inside, runs like a dream, and I'd like to keep it that way. After all, paying a premium for oil is a lot cheaper than buying a new car.

There's been a few mentions on these forums of people using Shell Rotella T6 engine oil, and that's what I planned on going with; until I saw on the jug that it's a diesel oil.

In the past, diesel oils would play havoc with cat converters and as a general rule, weren't recommended for other engine types.

Is that still true with today's oils and engines? I used to run diesel oil in my old Chrysler Cirrus with no trouble, but that could have been a fluke.

If anyone reading this has experience with Rotella T6 oil (or diesel oils in general), their opinions/input would be greatly appreciated.

Affirmative. No problems. I've been running it for 4-1/2 years now. Currently have 270kmiles on this engine, still running great.

Here's my take from reading up on it on BITOG.com:

To qualify for the automotive API classification, there is a much lower zinc level allowed than the diesel oil classifications. However, the two specs. overlap for zinc content. Most auto-classified oils are below the lower cutoff of the diesel spec., and most diesel-classified oils are above the upper cutoff of the auto oils. T6 is in the overlap area. The amount of zinc is not enough to hurt the cats, but I figure why not get improved extreme-pressure rubbing wear properties with no other downsides that I am aware of.

I like the 5W-40 spread for an older engine, and wanted to extend my oil change intervals out from 3500 miles to 5000 miles 'cause I'm a DIY'er and am getting older. Went to it on all 4 of my vehicles ('99 Buick, '85 F150, and '98 Concorde 3.2), except use Pennzoil Platinum 5W-30 in our bought-new 2016 Mitsubishi Outlander. Full disclosure: Lost my 3.2 engine 1-1/2 years ago, but was due to timing belt breaking prematurely - not an oil issue.

Thanks for the input. I tossed in some Rotella T6 in my Concorde and gave him a new Wix filter. The engine is definitely smoother.

On an unrelated note, my Concorde has this habit of squealing the tires when the transmission shifts from 1st the 2nd gear. It only happens when I floor it, but I'm wondering if it's normal for the transmission to deliver that much torque to the wheels, especially since I have the smallest engine available. The tires themselves are only a year old. And I did get the transmission fluid/filter changed roughly a month ago.

Does your Concorde do the same thing?

I never noticed or really thought about it, but I generally don't floor it in lower gears. Also, I have the 3.2/3.5 gearing but a 2.7 since I transplanted the 2.7 from the body that I scrapped into this used-to-be 3.2 body.
