1997 LHS In Limp Mode! Help!

1997 Chrysler LHS - 3.5 Motor

On mother's day of all days the car went into limp mode. It seems to shift fine manually but obviously in limp mode it will not shift beyond the single gear allowed in order for me to limp home. I highly suspect that there is something electrical going on and not actual hard trans damage of any kind but I could of course be wrong. I had the system scanned with one of those heavy duty scanners and these are the codes that it tossed in my direction...

12 - Battery Power To Mod Disconnected
29 - TPS Signal
36 - Fault Immediate After Shift
53 - Gear Ratio Speed In 3rd
54 - Gear Ratio Speed In 4th
74 - Calculated Oil Temp In Use

I believe that 36,53,54 are the only codes that can send the trans into limp mode but not so sure about that so hoping someone might have some advice there too but what I mainly need to know is what I should be trying to do next to fix this issue so the car will safely come out of limp mode. I need to get the vehicle up and running without being ripped off and without wasting money trying to fix the wrong things, so any suggestions or advice would be greatly appreciated.

UPDATE: We replaced input and output speed sensors and that did not fix issue. Nor did trying
another computer brain or EATX relay fuse. So now we are really lost and running out of options.

You already know the answer I am afraid. The speed Sensors, and a fluid change or typically the first things to try and solve a Trans issue. But with those codes I am suspecting a Transmission that has died.

Ok can you be a bit more specific with your opinion and why you reached it because that doesn't seem to be the case at all from our standpoint so curious as to what made you come to that conclusion...

for grins and giggles,, Id get the TPS fixed, the ecm may not know where the throttle is and keep it from shifting, its just a shot in the dark,
I do know on the newer GM products , if the coolant sensor is bad,, it wont shift for crap, just my .02

Im no expert by anyone's account, but Id say your situation seems to be one that deserves a little bit of further research work on your part. On these cars if a sensor is bad it will throw the car in limp mode. If the transmission was working fine with no issue previous to the car going into limp mode, I wouldn't just throw in the towel. Check into sensors that could be the cause of your issue. Also check the wiring with a meter of some sort to make sure the sensors are getting the proper voltage to each wire. At the end of the day I think your issue could be resolved in less than 100 bucks. If the car is worth it to you, and 100 dollars isn't too much money, then I say don't give up! Sometimes the cheapest solution is the right solution. These cars are sensitive. I used to think this was a problem but all this sensor sensitivity I believe is actually a good thing. It prevents possible serious mechanical damage. But thats just my 20 cents. Check my Transmission Success Story Thread on my profile page for more info on matters like this. Good luck and take care.

woah man, thanks for the advice. This week I'm going to give my car its last chance. First I will replace the radiator (omg my radiator is broken and this causes the ATF gets burnt in just a week and the coolant evaporates completely in days ), then I'll replace both input&output sensors and then, another pair of sensors which are failing: the TPS and IAT sensors. According to the dance key I have no more codes than these two, so I'll see what happens once all these stuff are replaced by brand new ones and I'll keep u informed.

see ya soon

Same problem than Sammantha:

12 - Battery Power To Mod Disconnected
29 - TPS Signal
36 - Fault Immediate After Shift
53 - Gear Ratio Speed In 3rd
54 - Gear Ratio Speed In 4th
(and not the 74 code that she has)

Ok, I think it's time to throw my towel away...

- replaced TPS
- replaced IAT sensor
- replaced engine radiator + new fresh coolant (11.5 qts)
- replaced ATF+filter (complete flush)
- replaced input output sensors
- cleaned PCM wires and connectors (not TCM)
- codes 12 and 55 now (normal)
- transmission codes not resetted yet in the chrysler dealer (would it help if I reset it? I dont think so  )

This is incredible, 15,000 miles brand new tranny and already worn... WHAT THE...

Trully, I think It's time for an overhaul or junk the car, :( any suggestions?

Thank you
