1999 Chrysler Concorde problem starting

I have a 1999 Chrysler Concorde LXI and for a while I've been having problems starting it. It was hard to start sometimes, now it's getting worse. Here is the problem, I turn the key and the dash lights come on with no problems, but all I hear is a single clicking sound coming from somewhere near the front. I have to keep trying 30 to 40 times (estimate) before it starts up and it runs great. When I get to my destination and turn the car off, I try to restart it but the same thing happens. The engine isn't turning over or anything, just the single clicking sound. Then it fires up after so many tries. The battery is a 2 year old Autozone "Duralast Gold" and I cleaned the battery terminals (even though I didn't think this was the problem). I'm getting the full 12.6 volts coming off the battery so that's not the problem. Can this be the starter relay going bad or starter itself? What is the click sound from under the hood (assuming it's under the hood) Thanks for the help.

You should measure the battery voltage while you're cranking it to really see if the battery is the problem (voltage should not drop below I think around 10 or 10.5 volts). A bad battery could measure 12.6 with no load, but the voltage would plummet with starter load.

Most likely it is the contacts in the starter solenoid (attached to the starter). That's exactly how they do when they are worn out.

You can replace the whole starter for a bunch of money and likely end up with an inferior rebuilt, or you can replace the contacts and solenoid plunger for under $20 - they come as a kit. *Very* rare for anything else on those starters to go bad/wear out over the life of the car.

Best deal on the planet for the kit: http://www.amazon.com/Victory-Lap-ND-34SOL-Solenoid-Repair/dp/B0031HMS7C

Do *not* get the Dorman kit at the auto parts stores - it costs more and doesn't come with the plunger, which is one of the wear parts - very stupid.

And here's an excellent video on how to install the kit:
