autostick and transaxle shift rod???

here is my situation. my brother had a code that said the solonoid pack was bad in the tranny on his 2004 300m. i said no problem, bring it over. I dropped the trans pan, pulled of the trs switch and undid the pinch bolt for the shift lever. I did NOT move the shift rod. i realized i had enough room to pulled out the solonoid pack and replace it with the new one. I did just that. I never messed with any of the actual shift rod assembly. I bolted everything back up, everything went smooth. filled it up with trans fluid, and took it for a test drive. It was running fantastic!!! then i tried to put it in autostick mode. IT REFUSES TO EVEN GO IN!! what i'm wondering if anyone knows, or maybe someone can check for me. When you put it in autostick mode. does it physically turn the shift rod on the transaxle. or is it strictly electronic position???? please help, i don't want to tear this thing back apart if it is a bad shifter cable or gear shifter!!! thanks for all your replies!!!

Try "slamming" it into autostick, (not to hard, just firmly..lol) it may just be slightly out of adjustment, as the shift rod might have moved slightly when you loosened it.

Autostick is all in the trans controller, so it is not likely you did anything electrical wise to disable the autostick.

It is the electronic position. It is the position of the range sensor. The PCM looks at which contacts of the range sensor are closed and which are open to determine what position the shifter is in. The shift cable needs adjusting or something is otherwise out of whack in the proper reading of the shifter position.

First step would be to adjust the shifter cable (see FSM) - you have to remove the shift knob and the bezel - easy process. No binding in the cable at all? Shifter is easy to move other than the feel of the detents?

Idk why it would be unpluged but while your adjusting the shifter cable feel free to look at the back of the shift assembly and make sure the plug is fully plugged in for the AutoStick feature. Also if your car is hard to shift at all, sometimes rust in the cable will prevent you from putting the car in AutoStick mode. However, since you have an 04 with the better cable, I doubt this would be your issue. Adjusting the cable may help though and is worth a shot.
