Be sure to have some spare change with you...

This is just a reminder to everyone who isn't from Illinois and is unfamiliar with that fact that many of the highways/freeways have tolls.

So, keep some spare change with you, as the tolls are $0.40, but don't worry, if you don't have correct change most of the tolls have a lane where they will break a dollar or whatever for you.

One of the things on my "Things To Do Before I Die" list is to start out in Chicago and take old Route 66 as far west as it still goes.

Route 66 was the original highway that connected the East and Mid-West to the West coast. Thousands of people emigrated to the west using that route during the 1930s and 40s,

I have been on a lot of 66, I am a HUGE fan of it. I even had one of my senior photos last year on that road. Yep, drove all the way to missouri to do it too!
There are bits and pieces of it. Most of the remaining highway sits in the southern states.

Route 66 goes right in front of my house, connected to my driveway.

Current prices in the suburbs by the hotel are somewhere around $1.50, but probably in the buck 40s.

If memory serves me right, sections of 66 were not paved. You had long stretches of no gas stations. And in the 40's and 50's a lot of wierd stuff popped up along the route. (hotels, trinket stores etc.)

You're right, and in the smaller towns where Route 66 still exists, the trinket and burger stands provide a major source of income for those towns.
