: inside the 3.5 ....

Well, I checked up on my car in the garage... anyone other there with over 50K on a water pump, get the thing at least checked out.

well, the blown head gasget was indeed a blown head gasget, not a cracked head (phew) One of the previous owners ran a different spark plug the the #3 cylender, and happend to run it too hot. it burnt the metal ring on the head gasget, and cooked the exhaust valve seals, making my cooling system gather air and giving the car a slight miss over the power range.

It just so happened that the Idler pulley decided to SHRED itself last weekend on the hiway... so with the air in the system and a mal-functioning water pump.. I overheated. bah. I just couldn't belive the Pulley. there was nothing left other than the outer ring that the belt runs on. everything inside it was shrapnel.

The bore on the 3.5 is 96mm or 3.78 inches, and the stroke is 81mm or 3.189 inches.

the stroke seems so much less than that.... sheesh.

Woohoo, I said head gasket in the previous post. I am now ASE certified. My first semi correct diagnosis out of about 50 tries.

You know, when I opened up the bottom end of my engine, I thought how big the pistons were. Its all relative to what you are used to. Compared to a 1.3 4 banger its a big engine.

heh.. not compared to a 5.7 L Chevy V8 tho......

My first car was 652cc, with 2 cylinders. Air cooled. Now thats small.

what did ya do? soup up a Briggs and stratton V Twin?

Seriously tho, what type of car was it?

Citroen Visa. Basically a 2cv with a different body.

You think a 5.7L V8 is big? I had the privelage of watching the teardown of an International diesel bus engine. Shit, you can almost stick your head in the cylinder bores!

Hey NC, your speaking a different language bro, I am betting there are very few people on this board who know what a Citroen is, let alone a 2cv or Visa.

I've seen a few growing up, and rode in a couple. Pretty interesting cars.

If you think that the International pistons are huge you should take a look at a CAT D8 bulldozer tear down. You have enough room to put your head in there and move around and inspect the cylinder walls. The slugs are about 75lbs. each. They are monsters!!!
