Not really...I've done mine just recently. Make sure you do it when the car is bone cold, so that you lose the least amount. You'll need about 1/2 liter to top it off.
I was told by a dealer to have the front end raised up a bit to help aid in clearing out some of the air bubbles but of course this isnt necesary to just change one out. Dont forget the obvious like a new gasket and not putting it in backwards...
It might not be your thermostat. Try touching each of the heater hoses. If one is hot, but the other is cold, then flow going thru the heater core is restricted. Try backflushing it with a garden hose.
You are supposed to purge air from the system. It's easy to do with a 1/4 inch tubing attached to the nipple on the thermostat housing.
