Posting this to ask if anyone else has had a similar experience with burning oil and if they found out what was wrong. What i have to go on is that when i drive long distances or drive "aggressively" i get a burnt oil smell from my engine. I check my oil periodically and its usually low, and then i fill it up. Also when I'm rutting around underneat it I notice oil droplets on the oil pan. It doesn't leak actively when parked. I know the oil pan nut is not leaking. It also seems as though the oil is dripping onto the exhaust and burning there, not inside the engine as there is no oil coming out my exhaust. Also my rotors are not sticking or locking up (burning brake smells similar). I don't think there's oil in the radiator fluid. Any idea's.. its really annoying and i need to get it fixed for obvious reasons.
you probably have leaky valve cover gasgets. when you push your engine.. more oil goes to the top of the engine with the increased revs.. and this makes more oil leak out the gasgets. this also heats up the engine to burn off the stuff that runs down the sides. this would also explain the "oily" engine. Replace the gasgets and you should be fine. (it doesn't cost too much)
I agree with Lafrad. Also take a peek in your sparkplug tubes. Those have been known to leak and fill up with oil, and eventually overflow onto the valve covers (and then drip on the exhaust manifold shield causing your oil smell).
How many miles do you have on the car? I had my oil pan off to replace an oil pickup tube and I resealed the pan. I didn't have a whole lot of oil leaking but I did notice that there was some oil residue towards the front cover. I took some pics to see where it was coming from and I thought it was from the front seal by the oil pump. I have a picture if you'd like to see. It could be that the oil is flinging up into the engine compartment from this seal near the rotating crank pulley. If there is a burning then it is probably a valve cover gasket like suggested. I would do a full gasket replacement (minus head gaskets) to see if it corrects the problem.
My ex-girlfriend is going to UW Eau Claire, and I'm going to MSOE here in Milwaukee Lafrad. And as for the oil I will check it out and see if there is any up by the crankcase. I'm at school right now so it is very hard to work on my car... I've already done a parking lot caliper and rotor replacement when that died on me driving in Milwaukee. Not the mention its 15 degrees outside
before you replace the valve cover gaskets, make sure the bolts holding them down are torqued properly. i thought my gaskets were shot but they were fine....but the bolts were hand loose. i went ahead and replaced the gaskets since i already had the plenum off but i think that tightening the bolts would've solved my problem. btw, i was getting that burning smell too....it is from the oil squeezing out of the VC gaskets onto the exhaust manifold, which is near the pickup for the heater.
Nothing personal Lafrad, but it would be very rude of me to actually give out her name without her permission.. you know what I mean..
