Timing belt question

Hi,

my mom and me we both have nearly the same cars:She has a 94 and I have a 96 Eagle Vision 3.5 TSI.The 96 has AutoStick.

When driving the 94 I notice a bit more engine power then mine has.
Other then that,my car runs great.

So this is what I´m guessing, but I´m not sure: I had my water pump replaced under warranty some days after I bought the car.
Can it be that they have messed up my ignition timing by e.g. slipping the belt by one teeth??Is there any way I can check this?

I assume it´s timing related (retardet timing) and the water pump repair is the only thing which was done in the vicinity of the timing belt....

Any ideas???

Thanks in advance!!
Benny

BTW:Is it hard to change the timing belt???

Quick check:

Take one spark plug out, from each bank, and compare the left and right compression readings. I got mine off just a *tiny* bit, as they're 165 and 170. Close enough. FWIW, I installed mine in an interstate rest area, so it's a home job.
