When I am accelerating, there is a slight "hissing" sound coming from behind the dash by the passenger feet area...any idea what this is? The noise goes away when you let off the gas. Doesn't seem to affect driveability, just wondering
Also, is the HVAC blower motor located ~ behind the dash (lower right-hand corner) ??? I notice that something is "buzzing/whirring" in that area even without the key in the ignition.

When you open the doors, a small motor starts blowing air around the temp. sensor, locatet behind the logo on the dash, for about 1 min. or so. It could be that sound you're hearing. Try putting a piece of light paper in front of the logo. It should stay in place as long as it is running.
My car makes both of the noises you have described. Good reply on the temperature sensor blower. Now what about the whirring or hissing sound when on the gas (easily heard on the highway with the windows rolled up and the stereo off).
My (or currently, my dad's) '97 ES 3.5 makes that hissing noise from behind the dash too.....I'm curious if it has anything to do with the fact that his A/C no longer blows cold......a leak?
Yes, that buzzing behind the "Dodge" (or in my Canadian case "Chrysler") script is the little fan for the temperature sensor - I've taken it out and cleaned it myself.
Does the hissing noise go away when changing your climate controls ie heat to defrost and back? Sometimes these can get hung up and cause noise. Plus you would really notice it the faster you go... hence the faster the air flow the louder it gets.
Do you think a simple recharge would solve the problem.....I was thinking a leak would have to be patched - how did the R134a leak out in the first place?
I was asking myself the same question after I recharged the A/C system....how did the refrigerant leak out in the 1st place? I charged the system around the beginning of the summer and it still worked in the fall, so I'm assuming maybe it just goes bad after time....?
Getting an A/C system leak tested and fixed can be a costly process, so I figured as long as it stays a small leak (assuming it IS a leak), I'll just keep buying R-134a each summer and putting some in there. Its not expensive.
I just thought of something else:
If the system still works next summer then I'll know that there is no leak, but if the system doesn't work or has diminished performance, then I'll know there's a leak somewhere. I have a feeling that there is a small leak, and over the 8 years that the car has been around, eventually all of the R-134a escaped.
No offense, but I don't subscribe to the air conditioning leak theory (at least not on mine). I've owned the car for almost 4 years now and the noise has occured since the first day I owned the car and my air conditioning is damn strong *knocks on wood*.
I agree that it is not a/c, but on a side note R-134 does not last as long as the freon and previous methods of cooling. Occasional charges are becoming necessary, but not necessarily because of a leak. They still have to by law check for leaks before charging at a shop though.A "slow" leak, depending on where it is and the usage of a/c, would not last through a whole year.
I sorta have the same problem, although I've figured out that my bussing noice is most likely the heater? fan inside the dash, under the glove box, knocking against something when I turn the heat on. It only happpens a little bit when I turn the heat on only, then goes away. Also when I totally shut it off, the fan knocks against it's housing, but then stops, probably because the fan stops turning. ANyway, I'm probably going to take apart the lower dash (total Pain!) and fix the knocking fan this weekend.
