: More 300M Special Details!

I know it was talked about the 255 HP engine, dual exhaust (in lower rear fascia), 150mph speedo, 18in wheels, and lowered body (1/2 inch). But the 300M Special also got HID headlights! That would be awesome if we could fit them in the Treps. Anyway, just wanted to post this information incase anybody missed the article on (also to note, "performance tuned autostick" whatever that is, 3.89 ratio gearing, higher performance brakes, firm strut damping, tall rear jounce bumpers, 17:1 ratio firm-feel steering gear).

That sounds like one sweet ride!

The special is also two-tone. So if you are not into darker paint on your ground effects... its not for you.

ok, pardon my ignorance, but which is better? a 3.89 ratio or 3.66? i dont know if bigger numbers is better or lower.

the higher the number the lower the ratio Ie lower number higher cruise at lower rpm higher the number the more grunt at the bottom end but runs out of steam at lower mph

I bet that gear ratio gives that 300M alot better acceleration off the line! Does car and driver put up numbers for the 300m special? Guess I could go check :)

gotta hurt the gas mileage with that ratio tho

From the ratios they are quoting, all they have done is swap out the 3.5L tranfer gears in the back of the Tranny for the 2.7L ones.

The service manual quotes the 2.7 gears ratio the same as the 300M special gears.

If you want more zip, go to the dealer and order the transfer chain, and the two gears for the back of the transmission.

Your mileage will suffer, but off the line will improve.

Or find a 2.7L car at a scrap yard and swap the gears.

There may be a cross member in the way which may complicate the swap.

Just get smaller front tires. They are a lot cheaper than the gear swap. I did it in my R/T. Gas mileage has not changed much maybe 1 less a mile per gallon. The car is quicker of the line than before. What i heard the 2 hp comes from taking the baffels out of the air box. I did that to my R/T and 1 to 2 hour job. A real pain in the ass to do. But that is where i am going to duct the air for my Shaker scoop winter project.
