My car is a 1996 Chrysler Intrepid, 3.3l, 120000 miles, no previous probs other than shift interlock.
The problem I'm having is that the tranny doesn't seem to want to fully engage in any of the forward gears. Reverse works fine. When I go into drive, there is a slight crunch/clunk coming from the front passenger side as the tranny engages. The car starts to move but as soon as the RPMs hit about 2000 and I lose all acceleration, I hear a whirring sound - not a grinding as mentioned in other threads - coming from the drivers side of the engine compartment. The car will sometimes make the shift into 2nd gear but as soon as the rpms rise above 2000 the same thing happens.
I've checked fluids and there are no visible leaks of ANY fluids. I'm stumped because this car went from 100% reliable to undrivable without any sort of warning. I'm really hoping this is not a major prob. It's my only car and I'm starnded in the boonies.
Diagnostic codes from MIL are 12,33,55.
33 doesn't seem to have anything to do with the probs I'm experiencing.
Can anyone point me in the right direction?
