I've read, heard and whatever else on issues with the 2.7. All of this I learned AFTER buying one. But to tell you the truth, I haven't had any issues with mine, beside the oil light flicker (woopie!!). I bought mine May 2004 with just over 48K miles on the odo, and I have around 76500 today. And I believe it was a fleet vehicle prior to me buying it. Knowing some of the history of a used vehicle is always a good thing, so you'll if the car was beat to ****, or taken care of. Bought it at a used car dealer (not a DC dealer) with a carfax report and carfax guarantee. I haven't had any of the motor apart, as there has been no need for it, but from what little I can see inside the valve cover at the oil cap, it looks pretty clean. Typical amber coloring from oil, but I don't see any sludge. A good running motor with decent power and fuel economy.
As far as the sludge issue, well, frequent oil changes and using a good oil is one way to minimize the sludge. Not to mention warming the engine up often. I do mostly highway driving, so mine's fully warmed up at least twice a day. Many suggest, recommend using synthetic in this motor. I have considered it but still use dino oil.
I find it funny this is in the first generation discussion.
But ya, almost 120k now and no problems. Although, I still have that weezing sound coming from somewhere now for the last 10k...not sure what it is.
