n_koutelas 11-12-2001, 01:21 PM Questions: How long did it take to do that? Is it a lot of work? How much did it all cost you? Could I do that to my base model 98 Trep (currently has not leather boot)?

30 seconds.
no.
$82.00 (for the shifter).
yes.
n_koutelas 11-12-2001, 10:08 PM How do you hook up the "shifter button".. .you know that button on the shifter you have to depress to get out of P?
IntrepidXJ 11-12-2001, 10:12 PM All you have to do it remove the screw on the front of the shifter. Pull the original off. Slip the new one over the metal rod. Screw the new one in. That's all. Don't have to worry about the button. That's automatically taken care of.
Wutang15m 11-13-2001, 08:43 AM Damn looks nice randy
Thrasher 11-13-2001, 12:34 PM here it is with the leather boot.

IntrepidXJ 11-13-2001, 01:02 PM Should have mine in a few days :)
n_koutelas 11-13-2001, 04:00 PM My 98 (no autostick) did not come with a leather boot. It was one of the first 98's made. When did they start adding the leather boot as standard equipment. 99?
Would it be possible to order the boot and install it on my 98 Trep, or do I have to also order the trim around the shifter too?
IntrepidXJ 11-13-2001, 04:07 PM They started the leather boot near the end of 99.
Yes you can get one (as I have ordered), but you do need the whole cover to the center console (including the ashtray and cigarette lighter). The opening for the leather one has to be bigger so the leather can move. Plus the fact that the plastic disk assembly is melted to that piece anyways.
I cost me $112 for that complete piece.
n_koutelas 11-13-2001, 05:48 PM Wow.. I don't think it's worth it then if you have to buy all that ... Still though.. the chrome shifter is tight! (tight=cool hehe) Gonna do the chrome shifter without the boot... thanks for the info
IntrepidXJ 11-13-2001, 06:00 PM Sure. The main reason I'm going with the leather boot is because it seems the previous owner spilled some coke or something on it and the plastic disks are sticking. I can't get them to stop no matter what I try.
DEEPRED 11-14-2001, 02:02 PM It all looks really great, I like the leather boot but for 100+ I will wait untill i have money to blow.
artifex 11-15-2001, 04:56 PM I want a leather boot for mine...
Do they have them for 1st Gens? because I hate that sliding plastic crap.

Warlord187 11-16-2001, 12:40 PM You mean the ES didn't come with the leather boot?????

Not in 98 and the 1st half of 99. They did not start using those at all until the end of 99.
1mz-fe 11-16-2001, 03:23 PM artifex, do you have autostick or not? the autostick shifter in the 1st gen (see my pic if you need to reference) is identical to the 2nd gen, the only thing that's different is that the console that it's mounted on is different. if you could find the leather piece from a 2nd gen it probably wouldn't be that hard to rig the leather boot in place of the plastic things. if you don't have autostick i have no idea because i've never seen another 1st gen (sans autostick) except in pictures. if i can find a leather boot i plan to investigate this... ;)
artifex 11-16-2001, 06:00 PM okay, call me ameture if you please, but I am very unsure about what exactly an "autostick" is. I'll take a photo of it in a little but, but all I know is that it's an automatic transmission and it's not on the steering column. heh, I'm a dork I know.

Look at my picture in the first post. See at the bottom where you can move the shifter left and right? That is autostick. Moving it left downshifts and right upshifts.
artifex 11-16-2001, 06:15 PM AHA! okay... I almost caught on, thanks for the help... and the answer is... No. I don not have an autostick, I just have a plain' ol run-of-the-mill SHIFTER (http://artifex21.tripod.com/shifter.html)
but yeah, I would MUCH RATHER have a leather boot on that thing than that ugly plastic plated thing. Ick and it's a pain in the ass to clean...
