Group,
After I completed my UD Pulley install. I decided I was going to run some GM Top Engine Cleaner through the motor. The principle behind this is that it cleans the combustion chambers, it rids them of carbon buildup. Cleans the valve seats, and improves the performance of the car.
The directions are simple, disconnect a vacuum line (I used the brake booster vacuum line), and let the motor suck the fluid into the intake. You'll need a length a tubing that will allow you to stick it into the bottle of cleaner..to the bottom. Once the fluid has been almost completely sucked from the container, you shut down the car, let the rest flow into the intake, and let it set for 30 min's.
Now doing the initial suck down of the fluid, there was some really white smoke that came from the exhaust. We also got a Check Engine light (prolly a misfire, it did not return) We killed the car, and let it sit for 30 min's.
Upon restart, some of the nastiest black smoke you'll ever see out of a car came out. It ran really rough, but then smoothed out. We let it idle for a minute, or two. Then took it out, and flogged it for about 15 min's. No more smoke came out, and the car felt ok, but it destroyed the plugs. I had my Autolite's in there anyhoo, so it was no big loss. I took the car out on the highway for 25-30 miles. It felt good, great even. But you could tell the plugs needed to be changed, badly.
Today, I removed the Autolites, and reinstalled my NGK plugs (gapped at .04 took the car out again. WOW, it felt like a car with half the miles, and 30 more horsepower. (that could be the UD pulley!!)
I am off work this week, I am going to be anal, and index the plugs. See if that will give me anything else.
Overall, the GM Top Engine Cleaner is a good tool, to make sure your engine's combustion chambers are good, and clean.
Carbon buildup causes knock, and other problems.
