View Full Version : Suggestions for a little extra bass...?

Okay guys, I just took delivery on a new 2002 Intrepid R/T with the Infinity system.

I'm just a bit dis-heartened with the frequency response of this system. Although I have not personally picked out the components, I understand the components included in this system are nine separate speakers (in seven locations) along with the Infinity 240 watt amp/system. First of all, I must say, this is more likely some sort of 64 watt RMS system, not 240 watts. I know my volume levels, and this system AIN'T no 240 watt RMS system! Maybe a 240 watt Peak to Peak system, but not RMS! (damn idiots still play the wattage rating games).

So anyway, I find that to get decent freq. response from this system I must set the three band EQ as follows:

Bass: Cranked all the way up.
Midrange: Almost cranked all the way down.
Treble: about midway between the middle detent and the top.

It sounds okay this way, and the volume level is acceptable, yet I really believe this system could use a boost with a sub-woofer. No, no, I don't want some gigantic sub/amp system that will take up my entire trunk. What I would really like (and believe is likely available, yet I don't know where or what product) is a smaller sub/amp combo that might fit either under the seats of this vehicle, or perhaps attach to the back of the rear seats (mounted from inside the trunk). Again, I think that perhaps a 50 to 100 watt single or dual sub arrangement would likely fit the bill. Again, just some extra low end so that the Bass EQ control on the radio doesn't have to be cranked all the way up.

Any and all ideas would be appreciated, and posting on the forum is preferred.

Thanks...

Tom.

I added a bazook a sub onto my factory Infinity system, it helped to fill in the missing parts of the sound and takes up almost no trunk space at all

I also removed the liner that runs under the rear deck to help get some of that bass out of the trunk and into the passenger area

So you want a little extra bass??? Try using live bait. :D

Sorry. That was pretty lame. :)

It sounds like a Bazooka tube would work for you.

Thanks for that info joekd. I went over to the Bazooka site and looked around a little, as well as Yahoo shopping and EBAY to check prices. Looks like a great idea for my needs!

So tell me a couple things about your install:

First, is your sub a 6 inch or 8 inch? Can't really tell by your picture.

Second, how did you hitch it to your audio system? Again, I've got the Infinity 240 watt (right!) system. Is there some outputs likely available somewhere on this system already? If so, where would the they be located (under dash, etc.)?

Finally, did you have to run some external 12 volt power to this amp somehow? What kind of current draw are we talking here at full output?

Thanks again!

Tom.

Snorton Norton:

I agree that the bass response from the $500 option  Infinity sound system blows. If this were 15 years ago, I would say its par for the course since all OEM sound systems sucked.

However, I have owned (including my wife’s 2002 TC w/Infinity sound sys) cars with the optional sound system and found them to sound great. Case in point, my 2000 Jetta GLX with the monsoon system. Great sounding stereo, outstanding bass response just all around good.

I am currently waiting for my shipment of Polk EX II 6 1/2 door speakers to try and tighten up the bass a little bit.

I'll let you know how it comes out.

my Bazooka is an 8 inch amplified model. Other people here on the site have the 10 inch, I've never heard anyone running the 6 inch.

I had the sub/amp installed by a local shop who I bring all my business to. there are no factory line-outs so they ran Line Out Convertors from the head unit to provide the low level input and also ran power right from the battery connector.

the 8 inch sub adds a noticable improvement without sounding too bassy.

If you are looking for a bazooka your best place to look is Ubid (http://www.ubid.com) , they always have the best prices on Bazooka tubes.

I personnaly chose the amplified tube for the clean look, many people believe it is part of the factory system.

One word of advise if you do get a Bazooka tube, don't use the fabric mounting straps they give you, throw them away and buy steel hose clamps form your local hardware store. After finding myself tightening the straps every week I bought 4 five inch clamps, threaded two together for the front of the sub and two for the rear and fed them through the mounting brackets that the fabric straps fit into. No more tightening needed EVER

joekd,
Thanks once again for the info, and the tip about ubid. Looks like a new 10" Bazooka can be had for $100 or less.

I went over to the local Audio King last night and looked around. Looked at the Infinity add-in sub (about $400 retail, $250 on EBAY), and IT BLOWS BIG TIME! Don't even waste your time, let alone your money...

I must admit though, the separates sound MUCH better. I'm now actually considering a smaller size box and installing a decent 8" or 10" sub, with a separate amp, again perhaps around 100 watts or a little more. Again, I WANT TO KEEP MY TRUNK SPACE (at least as much as possible). So I says to myself, "Self", I says, "Maybe I can live with a box that is around one and a half to two feet wide, a foot or so tall, and a foot or so deep. Maybe even one of those trapazoid style boxes." Hmmmm. "Need an amp too, nothing too wicked though, just something that will properly drive that sub with my existing Infinity (ohhhh wow! [right!]) system. Makes me wonder whether maybe someone has something used out there that would fit the bill, at a reduced cost from new (as long as they haven't been "smokin'" on it)."

So waddya think, anyone...?

Hey Snorton Norton,

Maybe my setup will fit your bill. I installed a low profile box that was originally designed for Sonoma and S-10 trucks. It's got a single 10 in it, and it only takes up the space occupied right under the deck at the very back (front?) of the trunk. The box is notched, so the amp (Clarion 2 x 200W bridged to mono) bolts directly to the box. Box is compact enough to be pushed right up against the seat. If I need to I can also remove the whole thing, since the box and amp one piece. I opted to replace my deck as well (it was worth the extra $300---makes the rest of the speakers sound so much sweeter). This setup can also be installed into the existing Infinity system though. I really wish I had pics, cuz the description doesn't do it justice. Installed, my setup ran $1000Cdn, which is like $600USD.

The small truck box may be just what you are looking for. Not enough bass to shake your windows, but just enough to fill in the gaps.
