Little intro, the wife and I recently purchased a 2000 intrepid hunter green with the (gasp) 2.7 engine. We just love the car and we are hoping since it has but 33000 miles there is still hope with good maintenance we can have a long healthy engine.
My question is during medium speed turns (right or left,40-45mph) there is a light almost a scraping squeak coming from the front of the car. I opened the window when the noise occurs and it is definitely an outside noise and from the front of the car.
Sounds to me like a bearing/rotor problem. What are your thoughts?
My first thought is 33,000 miles and 2 yrs old it's still under warranty so I would suggest getting it to the dealer before you get to 36,000 and it's out of warranty.
The wife just took it in today and they checked the power steering, took it for a test drive and said they could find nothing wrong. Oh, and frosting on the cake they said ‘if it does it again bring it back’. First trip up an expressway ramp I bet its still there.
Ah well, I guess drive it till it breaks, then they will have something obvious to fix.
for whats its worth a second trip to the shop they heard the noise and said its a belt so as I type this the shop is replacing the powerstearing belt,, a consumable so cost is mine
I kinda have the same problem. Mine tho, is just after I start the car, I pull out of my driveway and turn right. (about 1-5 m.p.h.) and I hear that metallic, squeal or scraping sound. Only when I turn to the right. Thats the only time I hear it. Maybe it goes away after the car warms up? My car is out of warranty, and it's not a big deal i guess. I'm not too worried about it.....till my wheel falls off....then i'll be worried.
Our Trep is going up on the rack Monday (25th). I think its rotor related and if they cant find it then its my turn to poke and prod <g> When I find what the source is I will post here.

This may or may not be your problem, but I noticed similar noises when I backed my car out of the driveway every morning. Knowing that:
1. Our parking brakes are a totally separate drums and shoes from the "real" brakes, and
2. I never use the parking brake, and
3. That brakes in general will make noises if not used for a while due to surface rust growing on the rotors or drums as the case may be (you know - if you don't use your car for a week or so, and it rains, how when you first drive it, you can hear the rust getting scraped off when you first apply the brakes),
what I did was drive for several feet with the parking brake intentionally engaged, but just short of locking up the wheels, then released it. Noise went away. Periodically I apply the parking brake lightly when driving it - not enough to cause any significant wear - as a preventative or if I hear the noise starting to come back (doesn't happen very often).
interesting, but in my case i'm sure that it's not rust. I know what that sounds like, and you can feel that too. This is more of a metallic screech. After 2 hours of putzing around on this site, I felt like driving my 'Trep. ( I'm currently storing it for the winter, so it's been about 2 weeks since I last drove it.) I pulled out of my driveway and turned right, and I heard that noise. I let off the gas, and kinda coasted, the noise only stopped when I was done turning and was driving straight. I drove around for an hour or two. When I pulled back into my driveway, i had to make a right, and that noise was back again. It dosen't seem to do it at high speeds, only when making right turns at 1 - 5 m.p.h. and I'm not using the brakes. I'm suspecting it's the power steering pump or belt? Or it could be a bad bearing?

So it does it when you're not using the brakes, so can I assume it **doesn't** do it if you're using the brakes? That to me says it has to be coming from the brakes (unrelated to my earlier guess about the parking brake though).
(BTW - the noise I heard when backing up was not your typical brake rust noise either - it was more of a high-pitched metallic sound. All I know is that it quit doing it when I let the parking brake drag a little. You're probably right that that is not your problem, but humor me and try going about a block at low speed with the parking brake paritally on, and then see if it still does it after that - then post back and tell me it didn't help, and I'll shut up about it. )
The car is still at the dealer’s garage but we finally got diagnoses. The power steering fluid has either broken down in viscosity or a lighter viscosity was initially installed from the factory. The remedy is to flush and refill with ‘type 4’ power steering fluid.
The car should be done tomorrow and will repost if the problem persists.
frosting on the cake - Its not under warrantee, cost is mine
