"Special" Project
Today I started an engine swap project for one of our fellow members on his 2002 300M Special, thought I would share some pics.
The car was brought to me with a spun bearing, and was making quite a bit of noise when running.
I found a 3.5HO to replace the bad one out of an 04 M with 37,000 miles.
Step one:
Step two:
Step three:
The new engine will be here hopefully in the next few days. I'll throw up some more pics once it arrives.

106K. Its few and far between, but it does happen. This car has had a rough life of stop and go city driving.

:grlaugh: :grlaugh: 3.5L's do go bad, infact we had a little spurt a couple months ago of like 3 3.5L's blowing up at the same time... One was mine (freshly rebuilt) I was at fault though...
Gotta stay on top of these motors or it can end up bad, but for the most part they are strong engines.

I just had to replace mines about a month ago also. What is the average lifespan of the 3.5's ? (as in miles)

Classic oil starvation there Your also a 1st gen. Those were actually better reliability wise.

These engines can last hundreds of thousands of miles, seen many with well over 200K.
Its like anything, depends on maintenance, and upkeep. No average mileage available, because these rarely fail, unlike the 2.7, which you can bet on doing major work to around 80,000 miles.
Last 3.5 failure I did had 189,000 miles, and there were some odd circumstances to go with it, having to do with the engine oil cooler not being cleaned from a previous issue.

So what did you do wrong with the rebuild?

Today's progress:
Got the engine installed, unfortunately cant start it because the tranny cooler lines didnt show up today, but other than that its ready to fire. The new engine came from a 2004 300M special with 37K. Im also replacing the struts and ball joints, which I pulled apart after I got as far as I could on the engine.
Gave the engine bay a quick powerwash:
