Running Windows 7
Is anyone here running the new Windows 7? If so, how's it working for you? Is it comprehensive, graphic problems solved, smooth running, etc.? I've got a great laptop maimed by freakin' Vista and I've been waiting for a month to see what Windows 7 had to offer, and I wanted some real feedback before I bought it. Otherwise I'll go back to XP.

I've been running Windows 7 for about a month now and its stable, but as of right now i'd stick with XP for the time being. If you ask me, its basically an updated version of vista, but actually seems to run a bit faster. I have mines setup for dual boot because i still use xp most of the times because its still alot faster to work with. If your laptop came preinstalled with vista though i'd upgrade it to windows 7, but if it didnt you might have trouble finding some of the hardware drivers for it.

Thankfully, there's a few sites that provide all of the drivers for my particular laptop to write onto a disc, so once 7 is downloaded I can work my way through the drivers and get my laptop up to date. However, the main problem I had with vista was the graphics. I had a geforce 9800 card, and with Vista I'd constantly get the BSOD with anything graphics intensive. I spent hours working on it. Apparently vista stores the original drivers in both a new and old system file, and it causes the card to fail constantly. Regardless, I just want the stability for graphic intensive apps.

There also seems to be an issue with peoples cdr/dvdr drives being detected but not working properly. It just occured with mines today and is asking for a driver to install my dvd burner. After searched and fiding a fix for this it apears to be very common.

Yup. I went through that too. For months I had to run Vista with the most basic ugly theme because even the aero theme was way to graphics intensive for the laptop. I hope 7 is considerably better. Windows is generally pissing me off lately.

Ive got a laptop running Vista and am using it currently and have had none of these problems with mine and its by no means a high end laptop. Your probably just using it wrong, just kidding. Ive heard many good things about Windows 7 and fully intend to upgrade to it ASAP. Its supposed to be just as fast as XP. Also its designed to run with the applications that Vista had problems with.

I agree that the laptop is probably using it wrong. As I understand it, Vista was meant to be both smooth and aesthetic. But never as efficient as XP, because that obviously lacked aesthetics. However, I found by fiddling with Bios and the NVIDIA controller that a shit ton of RAM was wasted on things and apps that I never even used but were required to keep Vista running. Things that would cause the OS to crash were to remove them. It's rediculous, and its true that Vista was ''pretty'', but never worth the RAM.

Sounds like a good deal. Lemme know how it works out for you, if you do it soon. I'm just going to cave I think. I have nothing installed currently on my good one. My crappy one's got Vista, and my good one no OS.

I would pull the trigger. I did the beta test and loved it. I am hoping to get it soon so I don't get shut down in the next few months when they time out the beta run.

Beta ran well for you? Anything graphics-wise. No BSOD?

I used the beta and the RC on my old Dell Inspiron 9300. Low ram, low HDD space, no graphics card, and it ran very smoothly with the Aero theme. Now I have the full release on my desktop (4GB of ram, 900 GB of HDD space, GeForce 7600 GT XXX) and it runs amazingly well. I had XP x64 on this machine previously, and 7 blows that out of the water. No major issues whatsoever. Only issue I had was the wireless card drivers didn't come packaged with it. A quick forage through my CD/DVD case found the old XP drivers for that card and now all is well.
The only thing is, on the Inspiron, it slowed down considerably after a month of use. Not sure if that was worked out before the official product release, but it's been holding its own very well for the last month on this much more powerful rig.
EDIT: I have run a few graphics intensive video games on the rig, and no BSOD has resulted.

That's the answer and response that I was looking for. The BSOD was driving me up the wall, and I have similar specs on my laptop. GeForce9800. 4GB Ram, etc... I'm sold at this point. Now concerning software, does 7 run anything that'll run on XP and/or Vista32/64?

My new desktop came with a free Windows 7 upgrade. There was a code in the paperwork that I entered at http://www.windows7upgradeoption.com -- now my upgrade software is in the mail. Can't wait until it gets here!

Yes, Windows 7 will run anything that runs on XP and/or Vista. It is designed with even more stability than Vista, and more multicore support. The way it runs processes and use memory make it better able to keep running even if an individual program crashes.
