Chugging and stalling when hot!!
Hey all, im new to this site..I own a mustang myself, but im on here for my dads intrepid..The issue he's having is after driving the car for about 10 minutes the CEL will come one, the car starts chugging really bad, and the a/c stops working. It will continue doing this unless the car is parked for a couple of hours...It runs fine at first but always ends up doing this again. He found that if he turns on his heater it doesnt do this at all..
Do you think his car may be getting to hot? Would that cause this issue? His temp gauge never reads above the middle...Thanks all!
Edit: its a 99 2.7

Ive been searching around a bit, does it sound like it could be the a/c pressure transducer switch ?

Since the CEL comes on try pulling the codes. Flip the key on-off-on-off-on with in about 10 sec. and don't go the whole way to the start position and any error codes will display in the odometer readout.

you added one too many on-offs DMILL89, without cranking turn the key to on-off-on-off-on within 5 seconds, when turning it from on to off, just move it one click, not completely off. its a 99 so the odometer will read you codes.

I'm not sure what it could be, sure someone will come along who is more knowledgeable. Did it chug at all after you disconnected the battery? If it didn't do it after the disconnect, it wont throw any codes beside the battery code until the symptoms reappear.

Yea, its done it since we disconnected the battery. It only does this once the car gets up to running temp, but stops if he turns his heater on full. Possible over heating issue even though the temp gauge reads fine?

1. check the CEL after it comes on. Probably will give some better knowledge. Maybe some heat related failure on the crank or cam position sensors.
2. this could be a bad fuel pump. The pump dies after heating up. I would check the pressure continuously and see if the fuel pressure goes down when this happens.

If it was the fuel pump, wouldnt it have the problem all of the time, not just after it warms up?

UPDATE TIME:
Ok, today we changed the crankshaft position sensor and it still has this problem. To recap,
The car chugs and dies when it gets to operating temp. If the temp sending sensor is unplugged it runs fine. We changed the sensor but still have problem. When the car dies it will take 15 mins of cranking to start again so we changed the crank shaft position sensor but still have the prob. Its a 99 2.7

air temp sensor maybe? best i can tell is that when the car gets warm and only when the coolant temp sensor is plugged in the car acts up. so there must be another sensor that reacts to engine temperature and has a large effect on the engine. im a little out of my element, what sensor changes the fuel maps per what the engine temperature is? i suppose it could be a defective ecm, but doubtful at this point.

So the air temp sensor could be faulty, which could cause incorrect fuel dispensing while running which is why its chugging, and possibly cause no fuel flow when trying to start the car when warmed up? They only CEL code i pulled was p1684 which is batt. disconnected in last 50 starts...can i cycle through diff codes when doing the key dance or does it just show one?

Also, your talkin about the intake air temp sensor right? not the ambient air temp sensor?

Right after the CEL comes on you should pull over and then do the keydance. It should throw another code besides P1684. Make sure you wait for it to say "done".
If you still get nothing, take it to a shop or parts store (unless you have a scan tool) and try having them pull codes. keydance will only get you generic codes. For example If a scan tool shows P0300, P0302, P0304, and P0306, (which are misfire codes, the last number corresponding the the cylinder number) the keydance will only show you P0300 (multiple misfire detected).
