Chewie's New Sig Thread
I dont feel like trying to resurrect my old sig thread so I'm starting a new one. Eventually I'll fill in the back story on my car with links and pics and stuff, but for now here's today's update!! I took a couple of new videos of my car accelerating. I like the first one because you can hear the engine decel which I think sounds wicked awesome. The second vid is a 0-70, its on slushy michigan roads so its not exactly top performance but you get the picture.
The rest of the day I rebuilt my gauge cluster with a few personal touches. http://www.dodgeintrepid.net/forums/...ad.php?t=81383
Stay tuned for more as I get more and more Bored...

The CEL is on because of a random multiple cylinder missfire that I havnt tracked down yet. Most people are telling me its my low compression, but I'm going to get new plugs and probably a new coil soon. Then new injectors are going in pretty soon too. If all that doesnt solve it then its my compression. (all of that stuff needs to be changed anyways)

Sounds good. I also notices that it seems that you are running a bit hot. My temp guage dosen't get above the first thin mark I see yours is up to the second. The guages look good to.

My car has always run at that temp. Not sure why its higher than most intrepids but it is and I'm not too worried about it.

I have a new radiator in mine and it sits exactly where chewies does, did they have a diff. in cooling systems over the years? Mines a 1997

Well mine runs a tad over the halfway mark in stop and go traffic or uphill, but on flat surface at 65 mph it runs a little above a qaurter ways up... But I did remove the condensor coil to improve airflow to the radiator.

my condensor has also been removed, dont know if it matters.
I got some more videos for you guys. I think I've become addicted, someone please help!! They didnt turn out all that great but its alright. You guys with woofers should get the full sound, the rest of us arent hearing how much bass there is.
If I ever get a buddy to go for a ride with me I'll get a flyby video for you guys.
On other topics, the 3.5L intake has been removed. I desperately need my mileage back, $20 per day in the tank is KILLING me so I spent a couple of hours reversing the swap. a couple of things remain, like the coil position. but for the most part its back to stock. With one very obvious exception, I left the spacer plate in. I noticed exactly how poor of a job I did with the port matching (must have been the get the project running frenzy) and I left it since flow wouldnt be effected by it at all. So now I have a 1/2in intake spacer and a 3/4in throttle body spacer, should be interesting. On the test drive I noticed a little more torque but still not enough to spin tires on dry pavement. (it was hard enough to find dry pavement) I am now convinced that my lack of torque is because of the low compression. Or my trans is crappier than I ever would have thought. I STILL Want my Turbo!! I didnt take pics because when I got done it was dark and I was tired. I'll get some up tomorrow.

Does it still have the missfire sound after you changed the intake. And the cooling thing is kinda odd to me, But I guess OBDII cars run hotter for some reason.

its definetly got a very dead cylinder...sound
ever double check by doing a compression test, just to see if they all are matching??
& that intake sound is weird, it sounds good, but i mean weird, like not normal 3.3 sound at all, actully i'm not sure what to compare it too, lol
also i wonder the completly different sounding exhaust is cuz of the "edging" i've read & was told that the "edging" tends to really change the exhaust note
anyways, i should do some new videos of my moms van, thats the only running 3.3 here, i need to do a drive by with the new intake, & the exhaust

My exhaust has ALWAYS had that lumpy missfire sound to it. I am going to do an experiment in a minute to see if I am correct about what is causing it.
The results of the intake swap, No Change in MPG!! The intakes sound very different, btw. when I swapped the intakes I also cleared the codes. I didnt have any codes until 40min into my commute. Cruising down the highway at my usual 75mph, I got a cyl #6 missfire. No change in performance, no sound change, nothing, just all the sudden the CEL came on. I already changed wires to fix the problem and it didnt. I'm going to go switch around the plugs to try and fix it and test my coil to make sure its still good. I'll double check my compression too, as long as I'm out there.
I sat down and talked over my car with one of my profs (you know, the one that knows absolutely Everything) and he said that my poor mileage is due to the drop in compression, its drawing more air and fuel into the cylinder and burning it like its supposed to, theres just more than it used to. Remember when the economy craze hit back in the day and all the car companies dropped the compression ratios? Fuel economy went down a whole lot too. So thats most likely what happened to my car. He also had a theory about my missfire, he said that the extra fuel means more heat going out the exhaust which could be interpreted by my O2 sensors as a missfire. That could explain my temp gauge being slightly higher than normal.
Long story short, I need some boost to bring my mpg back to normal. I know, the thing I wanted for performance will acctually save me money! Isnt it great?

Yeah. I would say you need that turbo. Cause I was watching ur vid. and as mean as it sounds. It almost seems my older 3.3 accels faster than urs. which, with the lower compression and all makes the reason. but eh. If I knew i could find a turbo for ya at one of my junkyards i would gladly ship it to ya. I will keep a eye out fo rone. Any you looking for!! causeing im going to go get a new upper and Tb to work with with my new Alumn. Shaving Drill bit tool!!

I'M SORRY!!! I didnt listen when all you guys said I had a missfire, I dont know why it took me this long to wise up. On the up side I did find and fix the problem before my car died, I just hope I havnt done any damage.
Here's the deal, I went out and pulled the plug wires and tested them, they are good. Then I checked the coil, its fine. Then I pulled the plugs, uh... we have a problem. Lets see if you can spot the problem...
Here's the culprit from cyl #6 as you can see the gap is ZERO meaning all of the spark was going to ground and not doing anything! So YES I did have a missfire and I'm still sorry I didnt listen, Wont happen again. Probably.
After I got that sorted out I went ahead and checked the compression, and they are all between 110-121. I dont think thats an issue.
The test drive went well, no codes, more performance, smoother exhaust note, no more vibration between 40-65mph. I really dont know why I didnt check this sooner. Oh well, I've learned my lesson.
I took this video to show the New 0-60 BUT my friggin camera battery died at 35mph. I'll take a full version tomorrow.
and here's some pics of the old intake back on. I might change back to my 3.5L intake, if I can scare up a few bucks for gaskets. I think for now I'll leave it alone. Its working and I dont want to mess with a good thing so for now it stays the way it is. Pardon the mess, keeping an engine clean in michigan is impossible.
