Devils work? Possibly. PITA certainly. Love it when it all comes together! I'm definitely a "fan" of over-cooling. In January my whole system took a nose-dive. I upgraded to a new board and Amd Phenom II Quad Core Black Series. Apparently my old fan died and the CPU cooked. I looked at the fluid cooled fans and decided that was out of my price-range but my local computer parts store had a few specials. One of which was a Gemin II S from Cooler Master. Freakin thing was huge.

But I loved the copper cooling lines that ran to the bottom of the cooling plate. No doubt one of the best system upgrades I've done. It's uber quiet and does the job well. What do you benchmark with? I haven't done this yet and since the CPU is designed to be overclocked I'm curious what the benefits would be.....

Then I'll do a 15% overclock and check again. These puppies are supposed to easily do 25%+ overclock on air cooling. Heard some reports of 40%! Too bad I'm not a Gamer.....then I could spend like $500+ on video cards! LOL!

When I'm done with the tests...I'll take a picture of the mobo/fan with the stock Zambesi cooler sitting next to the mobo.

This cooler has 3 of the copper heat pipes running down into direct contact with the processor. I used the heatsink compound that CoolerMaster supplied. Appears to be the standard Spooge many cooler manufacturers provide. If I saw any indication of problems I would've changed over to the Arctic Silver compound. Right now it doesn't look like there's any need for it.

Ran the Prime95 "Torture" test from around 7pm yesterday continuously until 4pm today. This was with all 6 processor cores going WFO! Checked on it at various times and the highest I saw the temperature was 51 C! I give this cooler 2 thumbs up!

I don't think there is such a thing as "too cool" on a CPU. The cooler the CPU runs, not only does it extend the life of the CPU, but it allows the CPU to run more efficiently. I have been wanting to upgrade the CPU cooler on my i7-860. I feel the OEM cooler could be improved upon.

Ron, you have any suggestions...will that bad boy work on a 1st Gen i7??

Tom this works on modern socket Intels also. From the list it'll work on yours. Here's what the they show for compatibility.

CPU Socket:
Intel: Sandy Bridge 1155 / LGA 1366 / 1156 / 775
AMD: FM1 / AM3+ / AM3 / AM2+ / AM2

CPU Support:
Intel: Core i7 Extreme / Core i7 / Core2 Extreme / Core2 Quad / Core2 Duo / Pentium / Celeron
AMD: Phenom II X4 / Phenom II X3 / Phenom X4 / Phenom X3 / Athlon X2 / Athlon / Sempron

Biggest issue is you need to make sure your case is big enough to have clearance for it. I'd say 7.5" maybe a little less.

Of course if anyone buys one of these and then finds they need a case to stuff it in...I have a NIB Antec 900 case available!

Some extreme overclockers use liquid nitrogen or even liquid helium during their overclocking benches which can severely shorten the life of a CPU. THey actually have to keep them running and really bump up the clocks and voltage to prevent the CPU from freezing and becoming damaged. Just saying there ARE ways to "over cool" lol

But for you average Joes, just stick with a heat sink and fan cooler. (no, you can't "over cool" with a heat sink and fan) Or if you want to get fancy, there's water cooling which works the same way a cooling system cools a car engine (a water pump, cooling blocks that take the place of the heat sinks on the CPU/vid cards, and a radiator)

Of course then there's Peltiers (thermoelectric) cooling..

I've installed a hyper 212 evo in mine.but i do have a second 120mm fan installed. installed in a push / pull combo. haven't done any torture test on mine. latest version of PC wizard shows all 4 cores at like 18.5 C right now. yes it is a beast of a cooler. if i upgrade CPU/mobo combo in future this will fit large variety of CPU. ( even if i choose to go to the other side {Intel} don't even say that out loud!!)
i'm sure yours has larger thermal output think mine does like 95 watts.

well used prime 95 for torture testing saw increase in the temp of 15 C during that time. latest version of pc wizard doesn't like playing with win 8 i think. as when i went back to check it is closing down unexpected error asking permission to send info to MS. when restarted it was in debug mode. this happened each time when i took it out of debug or left it in that mode. well going to send email to pc wizard on this.(not working today so little extra time on hands)
